Oncology Scientist - Compendium

The National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN), a not-for-profit alliance of 21 of the world’s leading cancer centers, is dedicated to improving the quality and effectiveness of care provided to patients with cancer. Through the leadership and expertise of clinical professionals at NCCN Member Institutions, NCCN develops resources that present valuable information to the numerous stakeholders in the health care delivery system. As the arbiter of high-quality cancer care, NCCN promotes the importance of continuous quality improvement and recognizes the significance of creating clinical practice guidelines appropriate for use by patients, clinicians, and other health care decision-makers. The primary goal of all NCCN initiatives is to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of oncology practice so patients can live better lives.

 

Summary of Responsibilities:

This position is responsible for development and maintenance of the NCCN Drugs and Biologics Compendium™ and the NCCN Chemotherapy Standard Orders Set. This staff member works collaboratively with guidelines coordinators, oncology scientists, physician panel members, etc. to ensure prompt and accurate incorporation of new drug indications from the NCCN Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology™ into the Compendium. Staff member also works with NCCN clinical pharmacists and others to develop and maintain Standard Orders Set.  Minimal travel is required.

 

Major Responsibilities:Attend or review guidelines update meetings and telephone conferences to identify substantive changes in the recommended uses of drugs and biologics in the treatment of cancer.Review draft algorithms to identify new or changed uses of drugs and biologics in the guidelines.Draft new compendium entries or update existing compendium entries to reflect changes in guidelines.Review FDA indications and update compendium to reflect any changes in agent labels.Enter update of compendium into the publication database and work with proof reader/copy editor to ensure error-free publication.Develop and maintain not indicated list for each disease site.Interact with NCCN clinical pharmacist representatives to Standard Orders Set project. Develop or update specific Templates.Track oncology literature, especially as related to drugs and biologics.

 

Education/Related Experience:

PharmD or RPh with ability to evaluate clinical research.  Experience in oncology and in oncology scientific/medical writing preferred.  Extensive expertise in and experience with cancer treatment modalities.

 

Skills & Abilities:Must have the functional knowledge to evaluate medical and drug use recommendations and to translate into comprehensive written guidelines and compendium format.Must be proficient in MS Office products.Must have strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with internal and external personnel at various levels.Must have excellent writing skills and the ability to formulate medical information in a clear and concise manner.Understanding of implications of compendium and order set products for utilization and coverage policy is a plus.
