Operations Manager

Columbia University has been selected to operate a Knowledge Center to support the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Cancer Biomedical Informatics GridTM (caBIGTM) program. caBIG is an open source, open access information network connecting the cancer research community and enabling the sharing of data and tools. The caBIG Knowledge Centers are designed to facilitate the widespread adoption and integration of caBIG standards, tools, and infrastructure by application end users, such as bench scientists, biospecimen managers, pathologists, clinical trialists, and information technology administrators. The Knowledge Center will act as a steward of the tools and documentation for several software packages developed through caBIG, providing access and support to those individuals and institutions interested in making use of or extending caBIG tools. The successful candidate will serve as the Operations Manager of the Molecular Tools Knowledge Center. This Center covers software and databases for the storage and analysis of data from microarray gene expression and SNP experiments, including geWorkbench, GenePattern, caArray, and caIntegrator. The Operations Manager will respond to inquiries on these packages, providing information or support directly, or managing access to technical staff. The Operations Manager will also oversee the code management systems in such as way as to support collaborative software development, with an emphasis on involvement by the wider community. He or she will coordinate with developers on bug fixes for reported problems. The Operations Manager may also support interactions with outside developers, vendors, and service providers who wish to use the covered software.  

Requires a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in education and experience, plus five (5) years of related experience. Master’s degree preferred.  

He or she should be familiar with the principles, current software, and methodologies of gene expression and genetic analysis. The candidate must be able to communicate fluently in written and spoken English and work as part of a dynamic group.  

The candidate can hold a master’s/ Ph.D. in a relevant quantitative field such as computer science, bioinformatics, biology, physics, or engineering or equivalent background.

The candidate should have prior experience in a bioinformatics research/support environment. Prior programming experience, especially with Java and R, would be especially valuable. Other languages of interest include C/C++, and Perl. The candidate should be familiar with the use of code management systems such as CVS and Subversion, and prior collaborative work on an open source software project would be very valuable. The candidate should have a good grasp of the complete software engineering process. Published work in the field of bioinformatics would be regarded as a strong asset.
