By conducting more relevant and predictable drug discovery that can yield new and better medicines for patients, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research is redefining drug discovery in the post-genomic era. Over the past four years, Novartis Pharmaceuticals has had the greatest number of new molecular entities approved by the US FDA. With its broad focus on diseases for which there is a need for better medical therapies, and with over 3,000 talented, dedicated research scientists worldwide, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research is well-positioned to ensure Novartis maintains its strong pipeline and highly successful track record in new drug discovery. Novartis Institutes has sites in Cambridge, Massachusetts (headquarters); Basel, Switzerland; Horsham, UK; East Hanover, NJ; Vienna, Austria; Tsukuba, Japan and Emeryville, California. Novartis Institutes' Cambridge facilities encompass 950,000 square feet of laboratory and office space. Research in cardiovascular disease, oncology, infectious disease, diabetes, ophthalmology and muscle disease is headquartered in Cambridge. In addition, Cambridge is home to the following platform technologies: Global Discovery Chemistry, Functional Genomics, Developmental & Molecular Pathways, and Models of Disease Center. In order to attract and develop an exceptionally talented and committed staff, Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research offers an innovative and comprehensive benefits package, including healthcare, insurance, savings, retirement, and work/life benefits. The Developmental and Molecular Pathways Department is seeking a highly motivated scientist to establish and lead a team that utilizes embryonic and adult stem cells for discovery and characterization of novel targets for drug discovery. Areas of interest include the use of stem cells to identify therapeutic proteins for regenerative medicine, use of stem cells to generate high resolution biologic assays using differentiated primary cells and identification of targets to specifically block pathologies driven by adult stem cells. Proven expertise in purification, manipulation and study of embryonic and/or adult stem cells is required. Knowledge and experience in developing in vitro models of stem cell function, particularly using imaging based approaches are a priority. The candidate will manage a growing laboratory, participate in development of internal and external collaborations and plan and establish a research program. The laboratory will also be able to capitalize on the extensive high throughput chemical and functional genomics expertise developed within our department. This position requires the ability to work in a highly driven, dynamic and collaborative environment.Qualifications"PhD or equivalent in an appropriate biological science, with at least 3 years of post-doctoral experience"Extensive experience working with embryonic and adult stem cells."Experience with design of imaging based assays, high content image based screening, expertise in molecular and cellular biology"Desire to apply cutting edge technologies and science to the study of and treatment of human disease "Excellent communication and presentation skills, ability to work in a team environment.
