Postdoctoral Fellow – Enzymologist
Philip Morris USA, a leading manufacturer and marketer of adult consumer products, in coordination with ClearPoint Resources, seeks a highly qualified candidate for the position of Postdoctoral Fellow. ClearPoint Resources administers Philip Morris USA's Postgraduate Research Program. At this time, we are seeking a Postdoctoral Fellow in the area of Enzymology to join our team at the Philip Morris USA facilities in Richmond, VA.
Position Objective and Responsibilities:
· Incumbent will provide be part of a multifunctional team investigating various aspects of tobacco fermentation.
· Incumbent will be expected to apply an in-depth knowledge of the thermodynamics, kinetics, and biological function of enzymes for the elucidation of chemical pathways in microbially-mediated fermentation of tobacco.
· The incumbent will design and conduct experiments to identify and profile the chemical nature and biological activity of enzymes active during the different stages of tobacco fermentation.
· The incumbent will design experiments to predict substrate utilization based on microbial population dynamics and apply research findings to define enhancements to overall process conditions.
· The incumbent is expected to have hands-on 1D/2D electrophoresis techniques and experience in LC MS/MS & data analysis. In addition, the ideal incumbent will also be capable of utilizing both public (e.g., MetaCyc, ExPASy, MACiE) and proprietary computational tools to confirm and/or predict enzyme identity and function from active microbiological organisms.
· Duties will be performed onsite at Philip Morris USA in Richmond, Virginia under the administration of ClearPoint Resources.
Degree Requirements:
· Ph.D. (doctoral degree from an accredited university) Enzymology, Biochemistry or Industrial Microbiology
Other Qualifications:
In addition to having earned a Ph.D. in a preferred area of expertise, ideal candidates also possess:
· Physical requirements - Typical for laboratory work: hazardous chemicals and
sophisticated analytical equipment; standing, sitting, manual dexterity. Must be able to tolerate hot, humid conditions in small-scale tobacco processing area. Must be able to comfortably lift up to 30 lbs.
· Experience in fermentation development with a variety of micro-organisms and
industrial enzymes.
· Previous experience in research in an industrial setting preferred.
· Strong written and verbal communication skills to participate in meetings and support required documentation, proficiency in the English language.
· A strong attention to detail and the ability to work both independently and as a member of a cross-functional team.
· Ability to present results in public forums and publish novel findings in peer reviewed journals.
· Ability to either work for any employer in the United States or obtain a qualified citizenship status such as H1-B, TN or other for consideration.
