Job Title:  Pre-clinical Research Surgical Specialist

 

Job Description: Mid level to senior position,under the supervision and guidance of the Contract Research Services department, the Research Surgical Specialist is responsible for supporting the development of products and technologies through preclinical research initiatives.  The RSS is responsible for the planning, execution and successful completion of study protocols. The RSS acts as a vital link between the Study Sponsor, Investigators, Study Team, and internal Operations Coordinator. The RSS supervises a team of Veterinary Technicians, assigned to the studies within the scope of his/her responsibility. This position focuses on the testing and the evaluation of clinical effects of various biopharmaceutical and medical devices through the use of in vivo models. In vivo models relates to various common experimental species as well as bench top efforts supporting the in vivo phase.  Examples of common models and areas of research required for efficacy or safety evaluation studies include: pharmacokinetics, cardiovascular, wound healing, toxicology, drug delivery, and metabolic diseases among others.

 

The candidate will have a hands on role in surgical activities as well as data collection, analysis, researching and generation of final reports.  The ability to research new disease areas and develop experimental models is required. Detailed understanding of the combined effects of anesthesia, metabolism, disease states and comparative data collection and clinical outcomes are all essential. The proper candidate will have hands-on experience with surgical techniques such as cut downs, suturing, catheter placement, intubations, gavage dosing, stent placement,

 

The candidate will also have experience or be familiar with surgical instrumentation in the areas of:

 

Fluoroscopy,

Anesthesia,

Ultrasound,

ECG,

 

Requirements:

 

Proven ability to lead, supervise and train others

3-5 years experimental veterinary surgical experience or similar experience

Experience working under GLP
Understanding of advanced imaging techniques and tissue preparation

Solid understanding of anatomy, physiology and clinical veterinary medicine

Ability to perform necropsies and an understanding of basic pathology

Ability to research, interpret and critique medical literature
