Principal Engineer - (Job Number: 0801860) DescriptionCordis Corporation, a Member of Johnson & Johnson's Family of Companies, is recruiting for a Principal Engineer, located in Warren, NJ. The Principal Engineer is a key position with an Early Concept Research Team dedicated to designing and developing percutaneous devices and procedures for the treatment of mitral valve regurgitation, a new structural heart disease area of focus for Cordis. Candidates for this position will have outstanding engineering qualifications as detailed below, be self-motivated, possess excellent communication skills, be recognized as an effective collaborator and team player, and have a strong record of successful contributions to the medical device business. Mechanical engineering with device design expertise and biomedical applications of mechanical principles is required. Project leadership experience is required. Experience in designing and developing catheter-based devices to perform minimally invasive or percutaneous surgery is required. Familiarity with planning studies for and working in a preclinical lab environment is required. Significant knowledge of cardiovascular anatomy, physiology, and biomechanics is preferred. A background in the design and development of cardiac imaging and navigation devices is preferred. Experience in upstream early stage R&D as well as activities in downstream product development for commercialization is preferred. Must be comfortable with exploring and tackling unmet or poorly met clinical needs, and must be at ease working on and leading critical project elements of early stage high risk R&D programs. Must be comfortable working with minimal supervision on broad objectives and goals. Works on complex problems where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of various factors including design considerations and customer needs as well as disease state conditions and constraints. Creates and determines direction and adequacy of device designs and procedures. Evaluates test results and recommends design changes. Provides imaginative, thorough, practical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. May take on significant project responsibilities including vendor relationships, customer contact, cross-functional or cross-company collaborations, coaching or supervising more junior personnel, and leading by influence to accomplish team goals. Requires a wide application of principles, theories and concepts in the mechanical engineering field plus a working knowledge of other related disciplines such as materials science and biomedical engineering. Has full responsibility for organizing, executing, and coordinating assignments. Plans and develops engineering projects concerned with unique or controversial problems which have an important effect on major organization programs. This involves exploration of subject area, definition of scope and selection of problems for investigation and development of novel concepts and approaches. Has responsibility for acting independently on technical matters pertaining to his/her field. Plans and conducts research in novel problem areas of considerable scope and complexity. The problems must be approached through a series of complete and conceptually related studies, are difficult to define, require unconventional or novel approaches, and require sophisticated research techniques. Regularly interacts with interventional cardiologists, general cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, echocardiographers, and other health care providers. May technically or directly supervise other engineers or technicians. Responsible for collaborating with internal/external preclinical consultants to coordinate safety and efficacy studies. BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and fourteen or more years of related engineering experience; or BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and MS in Mechanical Engineering or Biomedical Engineering and twelve or more years of related engineering experience; or BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or Materials Science and nine or more years of related engineering experience. Significant experience in the medical device industry is required. Must possess a clear mastery of theoretical and practical fundamentals and experimental engineering techniques. Must possess clearly recognizable outstanding technical qualifications and leadership. Must have excellent English communication skills, written and oral.
