Centocor Research and Development, develops innovative biomedicines. This position is in the Discovery Research department and requires a highly-motivated Principal Scientist to progress innovative biological therapies into clinical development for pulmonary diseases such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. The candidate must have a good understanding of the clinical and pathological manifestations of pulmonary disease(s) together with the target identification / target validation systems that can be applied towards the development of therapeutic compounds for pulmonary diseases. The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience in all aspects of the pre-clinical drug development process for pulmonary disease indications. He or she will be expected to lead and participate on multi-functional research teams and will also participate on compound development teams. The candidate must have a current knowledge of the scientific literature and strong inter-personal and communication skills. This individual will be encouraged to publish and maintain constructive contacts within the internal and external scientific communities. In addition, this candidate must have demonstrated experience managing a group of scientists and will be responsible for the career development of the scientists within his/her group. Qualified candidates must have a PhD in Pharmacology, Immunology, or related field. A minimum of 5 or more years of research experience is required, with at least 3 years of pharmaceutical or biotechnology experience. Essential functions: Strong knowledge of pulmonary disease(s). Lead research teams for target identification / validation. Participate on compound development teams.Must be highly organized and capable of handling several projects simultaneously. Strong people management skills. Good interpersonal communication and writing skills are essential. Function well in a team environment and mentor junior scientists.Remain current in understanding of relevant published literature.Ability to multitask and complete assigned duties within time constraints. Coordinate studies across departments, within Johnson & Johnson and with outside collaborators. Adhere to all applicable safety regulations.
