The primary responsibility is to support pre-clinical discovery research efforts focused on immune mediated inflammatory disorders including respiratory allergic diseases, inflammation and tissue remodeling. The candidate will be responsible for identifying, developing and executing human in vitro cell-based screening systems, and in vivo models of allergic disease, for mechanism of action characterization and novel target identification. Additionally, the candidate will work with other members of the Immunobiology Department and Research & Early Development organization in a team-based matrix environment to support target identification and validation as well as lead identification and optimization. This position is an opportunity to join a highly functional research team focused on the discovery and development of biologic therapies targeting immune-mediated disorders. The essential functions of this position include support of preclinical research efforts focused on defining the mechanism of action involved in the initiation and maintenance of allergic pulmonary inflammation and associated disease, identify, develop and execute in vitro cell-based systems for target screening, mechanism of action characterization and target association with human disease and design and optimize in vivo models of allergic airway inflammation. The candidate will interact with vivarium staff to coordinate in vivo study execution, sample acquisition and analyses. The candidate will manage processing and characterization of samples obtained from in vitro and in vivo studies including cytokine/chemokine response profiles via protein and gene expression analyses and ex vivo cell-based assays. The candidate will demonstrate strong oral, written and interpersonal skills including the ability to document and effectively communicate interpretation of data and results through both internal end external meetings and publications. The candidate will stay current with advances in new biological materials, technologies, and emerging trends/needs and consciously seek out new ideas and applications through journals, patents, scientific reviews, and technical meetings. Initiate and oversee research programs in the development or assessment of new biological materials or technologies for potential product applications. The candidate will initiate and oversee animal research programs to support new product development and evaluate research proposals relative to objectives and business plans. The candidate will be responsible for ensuring quality conduct of studies including design, data summary and interpretation, report and manuscript preparation and review adherence to applicable regulations. Submissions of research results for publication and presentation at scientific meetings, preparation and review of written information to provide product support and coordination of project review meetings are additional responsibilities. Ph.D. with research experience is required. Previous experience in drug discovery in a pharmaceutical environment is an asset. The candidate must have the ability to demonstrate an understanding of host immune response and associated methods of analyses as supported by practical laboratory experience. A demonstrated background with either human in vitro cell-based model systems or in vivo models of allergic inflammation and respiratory disease is an asset. Ability to work in a dynamic environment with a strong commitment to scientific excellence,demonstration of strong personal communication skills and proficiency with computers and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint are requirements.
