The group currently has a vacancy for a Research Assistant in the murine embryonic stem cell culture laboratory.Job Duties Duties will include, but not be limited to, the preparaton of stocks of embryonic fibroblsts (MEF) from mouse embryos, the preparation of feeder layers from MEF's, the maintenance of mouse ES cell cultures and feeder cell lines; performance of ES cell electroportation for gene targeting; isolation of drug resistant ES cell colonies; expansion of positive ES cell clones and cryopreservation of same, thawing, expansion and kayyotyping of targeted clones and preparation of cells for injection. The encumbent will be required to keep the lab stocked and to maintain the work area in a clean and orderly manner. He or she must be able and willing to work on more than one project at one time and to work alone AND/OR as part of a team, as the workload demands. Strict adherence to standard operating procedures and maintenance of detailed data bases will be required. GEM's is a small group providing an array of services to Caltech investigators. A willingness to participate in activities wherever needed will be expected. Training will be given. Some weekend work will be required.Minimum Requirements* B.S. in Biology or appropriate field of science or an advanced degree in an appropriate area of science.* Priority given to candidates with previous experience with eukaryotic cell culture, however, direct experience of ES cell manipulation is not required.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesWe seek candidates who have a professional attitude and excellent work ethic, are meticulous and detailed in their approach to work and have strong communication skills.
