Position Summary
The position of senior editor is one that embodies the capabilities of an experienced editor (ie, consistency, proper use of American Medical Association grammar and styling, clarity and conciseness in wording, fact checking, and querying) and who can manage multiple accounts (large and small) simultaneously. The most important characteristics a senior editor must have are a keen eye for detail, accuracy, and consistency in content and style, both within an individual document and between documents for account projects.
The senior editor provides editorial support for all facets of written, printed, and electronic forms of communication. The various forms of communication can range from articles, posters, slide kits, and printed materials for presentation or distribution at scientific conferences to correspondence on behalf of clients (including letters, budget and project proposals, meeting agendas, and attendee lists). With the continued use of digital and Web-based technology, the development of projects for inclusion on the Internet, in Web casts, and in video presentation also requires sound editorial review and assessment by the editor. The senior editor works with the department matrix team members from Scientific Services, Meetings Services, Creative Services, and Client Services to manage and meet client expectations and company standards. The senior editor must also work with junior editorial staff members to mentor and provide instructive feedback so as to foster development of their editorial abilities.
Reporting Structure
The senior editor reports directly to a managing editor or director of Scientific Services.
Specific Responsibilities
Editorial Capabilities Edit documents for clarity and consistency without altering scientific or medical meaning of content Coordinate editing and revisions to clients’ expectations Review scientific documents for clarity of data interpretation and presentation Style custom communications within budgeted timelines to comply with company editorial style, AMA style (10th edition), client style, or journal style, as appropriate Develop and update style guides for each product account, as appropriate Obtain guides/instructions to authors from relevant journals, congresses, CME providers or other relevant sources Conduct literature and Internet searches to verify accuracy of content and references Query scientific writers to resolve uncertainties or discrepancies in data interpretation or presentation Verify data in documents with source documentation (fact checking) Style references with Reference Manager software (version 11) Prepare journal submission packages; assist medical writers in obtaining permissions for figures or tables; ensure that figures are in appropriate format for target journal Exemplify professional behavior by exhibiting a positive and professional attitude towards interactions with colleagues and clients at all times
Developmental Capabilities
§ Provide mentoring/training to develop skills of junior team members
§ Consistently provide clear direction, accurate interpretation of client needs, program requirements, and strategic insight to the product team Provide ongoing feedback to staff editors and medical writers on the project work completed Proactively develop departmental guidelines and procedures (as needed)
Minimum of 3 years of medical editing experience A background in the life sciences, writing, or English Current knowledge of medical writing guidelines and styling (10th edition of American Medical Association preferred) Experience with Reference Manager software (version 11) Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment, work to and within deadlines and while managing multiple projects Strong administrative and organization skills, including ability to multitask Keen attention to detail, ability to prioritize responsibilities, and work in a team-oriented environment as well as independently Represent the company in a professional manner through appropriate demeanor, behavior, and dress Ability to maintain a sense of humor Advanced computer skills and knowledge of Internet searches (eg, Pubmed, clinicaltrials.gov) Competency to use Microsoft Windows software (ie, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) Ability to pack and lift boxes or objects up to 20 lb. in weight
