Scientist - Bioconjugates (Any Level)

JOB PURPOSEThe purpose of this position is to develop fluorescently labeled proteins, nucleic acids, and proteins-on-particles and DNA-on-particles. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES• Design and develop the chemistry for the synthesis of fluorescently labeled proteins and DNA and methods for purifying and characterizing labeled products.• Work directly with assay development team to characterize enzyme activity of various fluorescent conjugates. • Develop novel biochemical assays in a single molecule detection format. Independently initiate, direct and execute scientific research and/or development strategies. Independently plans and designs experimental methods to achieve technical objectives. Identifies and solves problems in experimental designs.• Critically analyze complex data using the knowledge of the R&D field, interpret and integrate experiment results with project objectives. Maintain accurate lab notebook and training file in accordance with relevant Invitrogen required standards to support patent application and defense as well as other international standards (e.g., ISO compliance, GLP/GMP requirements, etc.).• May supervise Associate Scientists in their daily experiments and troubleshooting. May lead project teams. • Investigate, create and develop new methods and technologies for project advancement.• Make contributions to scientific literature and conferences. Prepare technical reports, product summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. • Perform fundamental literature and patent searches related to products under development. Recognize opportunities for in-licensing and internal patent development. • Maintain high level of professional expertise through familiarity with current scientific literature, competing technologies and/or products and attendance of scientific seminars and meetings. • Impact business opportunities through successful completion of R&D tasks, new project and program proposals, and contributions toward improvement of existing products and processes.• Comply with all company safety regulations and procedures. Report non-compliance and may serve as team lead.• May be required to perform other related duties as required and/or assigned.EDUCATION & PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE REQUIRED• Experience acquired through achievement of an advanced degree in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biology, related scientific discipline and/or through relevant industrial R&D experience with good understanding of bioconjugation techniques, biomolecule purification techniques and fluorescence spectroscopy. • Ideal applicants will have a Ph.D. degree or M.S. degree plus four or more years industrial R&D experience or B.S. degree plus eight or more years industrial R&D experience.• Minimum of 3-5 years of working experience in the area of bioconjugations, with additional knowledge and experience designing and running biochemical assays • Hands-on experience in the synthesis, characterization and biochemical utilization of various bioconjugates, such as derivatives of proteins or nucleic acids with fluorescent tags, small molecules, or other biomacromolecules.• Familiarity with fluorescence-based assays. • Familiarity with surface chemistry is a plus. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES• Demonstrated competence in data analysis, research design and the evaluation of new techniques and procedures for manufacturing reagents, systems, products or technologies. • The ability to modify and adapt existing techniques and the creativity to develop new analytical methods as needed to solve unusual analytical challenges.• The ability to set up a research plan, conduct the necessary experimental work, report and publish results, which may lead to the completion of new products. The ability to make detailed observations, independently analyze data, and interpret results; design and conduct well-controlled experiments; devise protocols for routine use; advise supervisor on needed materials and equipment; and to suggest protocol improvements. • The ability to repair, troubleshoot, and maintain a variety of analytical instrumentation as needed.• Self-motivated, with a strong desire to be part of the team.• Enthusiastic and motivated collaborator with strong interpersonal communication skills capable of forging new partnerships.• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise and accurate manner and the ability to prepare written technical summaries and maintain a detailed, accurate laboratory notebook.• Strong organizational skills with the ability to efficiently evaluate prioritize and handle multiple and changing priorities and projects. Ability to work under pressure with strict attention to deadlines and details.
