Location: US-CA-San Diego Job Reference Id: 1055 Description: Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated is a global biotechnology company committed to the discovery and development of breakthrough small molecule drugs for serious diseases. The Company's strategy is to commercialize its products both independently and in collaboration with major pharmaceutical companies. Vertex's product pipeline is focused on viral diseases, inflammation, autoimmune diseases, cancer, pain and bacterial infection. Responsibilities: The successful candidate will oversee the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facility at the San Diego site, and make scientific contributions to both the Research and Development areas of the company. This position will contribute to the global structure elucidation program for our Pharmaceutical Development organization, supporting impurity identification projects. These unknown species may originate in our local process development laboratories, may come from other Vertex sites, or may be forwarded by our CMO/CRO partners. These structure elucidation projects generally involve separation and concentration of low-level process impurities from API, and the use of other techniques such as LC-MS in concert with NMR. The position will support Research projects including structure work for medicinal chemistry and metabolite structure elucidation related to the development of novel compounds. Responsibilities of this position will include maintaining and scheduling the use of our NMR systems, providing training, managing the sample queue from discovery and development, assisting Vertex scientists with spectral data interpretation and setting up complex NMR measurements. The successful candidate will independently design and perform sophisticated, technically challenging experiments, and experimental results may be used in support of patent applications or regulatory filings. The person in this position will maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the-art principles and theories, allowing contribution to scientific literature and conferences.
