Senior Chemists (2 positions)

 

SOUTHERN RESEARCH INSTITUTE is seeking outstanding applicants for several senior level positions in its Organic Chemistry Department, which is part of the Drug Discovery Division.  The Division uses an interdisciplinary approach to translate basic research into FDA-approved drugs.  We are particularly interested in attracting scientists with a deep interest in medicinal chemistry, a focus on collaboration, familiarity with high-throughput screening hit follow-up, and the potential to develop an externally funded research program directed toward the identification of novel therapeutic agents.  Candidates with an established research program are particularly encouraged to apply.  To be considered, applicants must possess a Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry or related discipline and postdoctoral experience.  The successful applicant will be provided a start-up package of transitional funding and laboratory technical support personnel where appropriate, while working to develop an independently funded program.  Applications should include a curriculum vitae, a 1-2 page description of prior research experience, and a description of future research plans.

 

Southern Research Institute, a not-for-profit research organization affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), has annual revenues in excess of $70 million and employs approximately 600 professional, technical, and support personnel. Six anti-cancer drugs have been discovered by Institute personnel and are now used commercially in the clinic.  Several additional agents in this and other therapeutic areas are currently in development or undergoing clinical trials.  The Institute currently has drug discovery programs in the anticancer, anti-infectives (bacterial, viral, and fungal diseases), and CNS (neurodegenerative disease, analgesic, addiction) areas.  As part of the large biomedical research community in Birmingham, we are committed to providing a stimulating and rewarding work environment.  Close proximity to the UAB campus facilitates interactions with academic and clinical personnel that are affiliated with UAB basic science departments, Comprehensive Cancer Center, Cell Matrix and Adhesion Center, Center for AIDS Research, and Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering.
