Sr. Director, Vaccine Development

Position Summary: Major Duties and Responsibilities (including supervising others): Job Description: The Senior Director of Vaccine Development will be responsible for leading a research organization focused on creating important vaccines for human health. Responsibilities will include identifying and assessing new vaccine technologies targeted at important diseases as well as supporting and enhancing existing vaccines in MedImmune’s portfolio.The leader of the vaccine development group will report to the Vice-President of Research & Development for MedImmune’s vaccine organization and be responsible for leading and managing a development staff with a wide range of technological expertise including molecular virology, immunology and animal models. The head of vaccine development should have in depth knowledge of infectious diseases and vaccines and committed to bringing forward innovative vaccine approaches to important disease targets. The director will work closely with colleagues from infectious disease research, clinical research, development and business development to identify and assess new vaccine targets as well as the technologies needed to address them. The head of vaccine development will work closely with the vaccine research groups to move clinical candidates forward and support early stage clinical studies.Key Responsibilities: • Provide leadership for the organization and manage a staff responsible for conducting discovery research as well as providing services for the organization. • Key team member responsible for the development of the company’s vaccine pipeline. • Form effective alliances with groups from around the organization. • Manage a diverse array of research programs spanning preclinical projects to life cycle management of existing vaccines. • Provide significant scientific insight into R&D of vaccine and infectious disease technologies. • Keep current with leading edge vaccine technologies and emerging disease areas. • Effectively represent MedImmune’s capabilities and programs to the scientific community.Requirements/Qualifications:• Minimum PhD, MD or equivalent in a relevant discipline • Minimum ten years experience in industry or other large organization • Relevant experience in vaccine research and/or infectious diseases • Proven experience in forming effective collaborations. • Self motivated and capable of handling significant responsibility • Ability to balance multiple priorities • Proven ability to develop and implement strategy • Strong written, verbal communication, and presentation skills essential • Organizational savvy and an ability to work with all levels within an organization.
