POSITION SUMMARY: This position will support the lead discovery and optimization of novel biomolecules across a variety of therapeutic areas. The candidate will be involved in the expression and purification of recombinant proteins from a variety of expression hosts including mammalian, E. coli, baculovirus, and yeast systems. In addition, this position will be involved in the design and construction of standardized cloning and expression vectors to improve processes both in prokaryotic and eukaryotic systems. The candidate must be able to function as an independent group leader with proven ability to manage a highly productive scientific staff. This position 1) interacts and collaborates with others regarding protein expression and purification support for both internal and external projects, 2) actively interacts with the internal and external scientific community to maintain a state-of-the-art scientific knowledge and 3) participates in supervisory process, including training and evaluating 2-4 Research Scientist/Associates, as well as coordinating their work. This position will also contribute or write technical reports, prepare and present posters at National and International meetings and contribute to preparation and submission of manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals. The candidate will also contribute to the preparation of invention disclosures and patent applications to secure intellectual property . ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:1. Diverse knowledge and experience with various expression systems.2. Experience with isolation and purification of proteins from both prokaryotic and eukaryotic sources using both classical and contemporary purification techniques.3. Experience with AKTA purification systems will be a plus.4. Skilled in molecular biology techniques and their application as they pertain to the design of expression constructs and systems in order to maximize protein expression and optimize proteins for downstream uses.5. Knowledge and experience with the expression of membrane protein targets for reagent production and in support of screening efforts and target validation.6. Experience in purification and production of antibody-based therapeutics are a plus.7. Experience in planning and directing the work of other employees' work is essential. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES / DETAILED DUTIES:1. Ability to work in a team based environment with excellent presentation and communication skills.2. Ability to comprehend pertinent literature, to work independently and meet metric-driven timelines.3. Experience with surveying and generating pertinent intellectual property around technology development.4. Experience with management of laboratory inventory and capital equipment purchases.5. Peer reviewed publications are a must. QUALIFICATIONS: BS degree with at least 12 years relevant experience, 10 of those years must be in industry (pharma/biotech), or an MS with at least 10 years relevant experience, 5 of those years must be in industry (pharma/biotech), or a Ph.D. with at least 2 yrs industry experience (pharma/biotech). Experience in purification of different classes of proteins and characterization/ analysis from multiple expression systems. Experience with mammallian and e coli expression systems are required. Experience in purification of antibody and non-antibody based therapeutics using classical and affinity purification methods. Previous supervisory/management experience is required. Ability to work in a very fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills.
