Position Overview: Vertex is seeking a talented individual to join our Cambridge, MA based Formulation Development Department. The objective of this role is to optimize and scale-up clinical formulations for Development compounds. Key Responsibilities for this role include: - Design and execute experimental programs to optimize and scale-up clinical formulations through Registration following Quality by Design principles - Oversee scale-up and technology transfer to contract manufacturing sites - Co-ordinate with other groups within the company (Analytical, Supply Chain Management, Process Chemistry, Quality Assurance) to ensure that Clinical Trial Materials are produced in a timely manner Basic Qualifications - A PhD in the life sciences with a preference for a concentration in Chemical Engineering, Pharmaceutics or Materials Engineering - 6+ years experience in the pharmaceutical industry working with small molecule new chemical entities (NCEs) - Expertise in process scale-up and optimization from laboratory scale to pilot scale and registration scale as well as familiarity with engineering scale-up principles, i.e., dimensional analysis. - Experience applying statistical approaches in the design and analysis of experiments, e.g., factorial designs and step-wise linear regression. - Experience with a range of processes, including fluid bed granulation, tabletting, roller compaction, spray drying and high shear granulation is a plus - Experience working with and managing interactions with contract manufacturing in a scale up environment - Inventive and innovative, self-starter who is comfortable and successful working in a multi-disciplinary team under defined timelines - Excellent leadership, communication, teamwork and organizational skills - Proven ability to apply the principles of the basic sciences such as physical and organic chemistry, thermodynamics, and materials science, to formulation and process development, using a rational, scientific approach.
