Sr. Veterinary Scientist II

The individual must be a veterinarian or PhD who possesses a broad base of knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine and research. Responsible for conducting screening trials supporting Merial’s pharmaceutical discovery and pre-development process. Responsible in part for protocol design and conducting clinical and safety trials to evaluate pre-developmental and developmental product candidates, in the target species and/or in surrogate species. Conducts negotiations with outside researchers on grants in aid and evaluates proposals and investigators. Responsible for being completely cognizant of all Good Laboratory Practices and Good Clinical Practice guidelines pertaining to veterinary developmental research. Maintains close contact with area universities, research institutions and leading practitioners and producers as to new developments, opportunities and needs in the animal health industry. Supervises Unit/Area groups as required.
1. Reports to Director;
2. Supports Pharmaceutical R & D discovery, pre-development and development efforts. This includes monitoring or conducting screening trials using surrogate and/or target animal species, in models or in naturally occurring disease. Conducts and/or monitors in vitro and ex vivo studies as required. The incumbent directly impacts Pharmaceutical R&D discovery initiatives by the quality and accuracy of data and analysis provided across the discovery group;
3. The position entails many responsibilities as a clinical investigator of studies at the Center as well as a clinical monitor for a field territory. Must have a working knowledge of GLP and Obligations of Clinical Investigators federal regulations;
4. Responsible for the supervision of personnel assigned to him/her by the Director during specific trial activities;
5. Must keep informed of new developments in veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, production and research, as particularly applies to pharmaceutical discovery and pre-development;
7. Should utilize opportunities for publication and presentation of papers in selected journals and meetings;
8. Must exercise discretion and judgment when discussing product development in a commercial environment, in order to maintain confidentiality and exclusivity of future products;
9. Is expected to perform all duties in a safe manner in accordance with Company guidelines and policy.

 

DVM or PhD and 3 years pharmaceutical industry experience required; DVM plus MS, PhD, and/or board certification strongly desired. Prior supervisory experience helpful.
