Neutrogena Division of Johnson & Johnson Consumer Companies, Inc. develops and markets color cosmetics, baby care, and skin care products that address the needs of consumers and health care professionals and incorporate the latest innovations. The portfolio includes all Neutrogena Brands for Color Cosmetics, Beauty and Skin care., including OTC drugs such as sunscreens. The Staff Scientist will be responsible for representing Microbiology Department on multi-disciplinary, cross-divisional teams. Act as liaison or key contact for manufacturing & facilities project teams providing guidance on microbiology requirements & issues for product launch through commercialization and marketplace (from lab batch to APR). The candidate is responsible for making recommendations to project team on preservative systems, negotiating which formulations are tested, tracking and reviewing all data generated on Preservative Efficacy Testing, Microbial Content Limits testing and ancillary tests, analyzing the data and reporting the results to management and key project team members in a timely manner. Responsible for reviewing raw materials for microbial attributes. The candidate is responsible for knowing the status of their projects, and being able to systematically retrieve and present data as required. Responsible to independently and with collaboration with other team members to plan and organize projects concerned with unique problems, involving exploration of subject area, definition of scope, selection of problems for investigation and generation of novel concepts for Microbiology, such as new technologies and claims support. A minimum of a BS with six plus years of industry experience, or a MS or PhD in a scientific discipline (microbiology preferred) with four or more years industry experience is required. Must be knowledgeable of the principles behind and testing requirements for Preservative Effectiveness Testing (or Antimicrobial Effectiveness Testing), Microbial Limits/contents Testing, water activity, microbial identification, physiology and ecology. Knowledge of color cosmetics is an asset. Knowledge of preservatives and formulation as related to raw materials, cosmetics, drugs is required. Other requirements include self-motivation, high level of creativity, handling complexity, excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent presentation skills, interdependent partnering skills, and leadership skills. Ability to critically analyze data, accurately report results and recommend next steps. Must have working knowledge of good laboratory practices and laboratory maintenance procedures. Knowledge of industry standards & requirements for Microbiology is needed.
