The American Assembly, founded in 1950 by Dwight D. Eisenhower and affiliated with Columbia University, seeks a uniquely qualified Associate Director. Reporting to the President of the Assembly and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, the Associate Director is responsible for the development and implementation of all American Assembly fundraising activities. The Associate Director will also work closely with the President and others on the design and focus of all public policy projects sponsored by The Assembly. As such, a keen interest in and awareness of domestic and international affairs is essential. Topics of Assembly projects have included aspects of globalization, business, security, urban and social policy, technology, and the environment.

In this key role, the incumbent initiates and monitors aspects of fundraising for the organization’s core budget, special activities, and projects. Along with the development activities associated with this position, successful candidates will actively participate in the oversight and strategic direction of The Assembly. Specific responsibilities include developing a strategy to identify, cultivate, and solicit donors and prospects for Assembly trustees and others for project-based fundraising. The incumbent will help to develop projects, cultivate donors, and establish outreach programs building on The Assembly’s strengths and resources. Responsibilities also include preparation of all written materials for fundraising programs, including special projects and events. Other tasks assigned as required. Some travel and extended hours are required.

The American Assembly is a national, nonpartisan public affairs forum illuminating issues of public policy by commissioning research and publications, sponsoring meetings, and issuing reports, books, and other literature. Its initiatives facilitate communication and action among decision makers, lawmakers, and other leading authorities representing a broad spectrum of views and interests from all sectors. Its reports and other publications are used by government and community, by civic leaders, and by public officials.

Successful candidates will have extensive professional contacts and experience in professional development, including the creation of funding proposals and grant requests, along with the presentation of these proposals to high-level decision makers. Exceptional writing skills are required.

Bachelor’s degree and/or its equivalent required, plus a minimum of 5–7 years of related experience.

Advanced degree preferred.
Experience in government, corporate, or foundation relations.
