WAGES (Women's Action to Gain Economic Security) seeks a dynamic, committed and mature manager to lead the launch and expansion of a new eco-friendly housecleaning cooperative in San Francisco with primary responsibility for operations, marketing, and finance. This position offers a unique opportunity to combine entrepreneurial spirit and social and environmental values – in the context of WAGES’ innovative and proven economic development model. We are seeking someone who:is an effective leader who brings out the best in othersis committed to working in (and helping to co-create) a cooperative structurehas significant management experience and wants to be a social entrepreneurhas deep respect for and skill in working with low-wage workers and a desire to make housecleaning a profession that gives women decent pay, benefits and pride in their workhas the drive and capacity to grow this cooperative quickly in order to benefit more womenis flexible, creative, patient, energetic, and collaborative in work stylecares deeply about social justice and the environment; andis an outstanding communicator in English and in Spanish
The General Manager has primary responsibility for managing and expanding the new WAGES cooperative in San Francisco. The General Manager hires and supervises the co-op’s on-site Operations Manager and plays a key role in selecting, training, and mentoring all co-op members. S/he works closely with other WAGES staff (Executive Director, Program Director, Co-op Development Trainer) that make up the new cooperative project team.
The General Manager's Specific Responsibilities
PersonnelSelect and evaluate all co-op members, and directly supervise the Operations Manager Coordinate with WAGES to provide worker-owners with on-the-job training in workplace participation and cooperative ownership responsibilities Teach and model entrepreneurial skills and an ownership perspective to all cooperative members Nurture commitment and morale within the cooperative FinanceManage the financial resources of the cooperative Capitalize the business through loans and equity investments Develop a plan for generating revenue and containing costs Create and oversee a bookkeeping system Provide financial reports to worker-owners, board and funders MarketingImplement the marketing plan for the cooperative, with annual evaluation and revision Ensure that the cooperative meets market growth and quality performance standards Implement, evaluate and improve the marketing plan for the cooperative Ensure compliance with WAGES’ standards for Eco-Friendly Cleaning service and product standards Organizational DevelopmentWith WAGES staff, coordinate the work of the cooperative’s governing board Build a strong partnership between the growing business and WAGES as non-profit sponsor Support WAGES’ initiatives to raise funds and develop a Bay Area-wide network of eco-friendly cleaning cooperatives Position RequirementsExperience in business or organizational operations at a leadership level and demonstrated entrepreneurial qualities Three or more years' experience supervising people and managing teams Experience in financial management, customer service, and marketing Experience with collaborative work environments and participatory management (direct experience with cooperatives is a plus) Excellent verbal and written communication skills in Spanish and English Ability to communicate and work effectively with people of diverse economic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds (including co-op members, NHC business clients, and WAGES staff) Must be someone who enjoys customer service and takes pride in doing it well Highly Desirable Additional Skills/QualitiesExperience with Quickbooks and service industry data management software Knowledge of environmentally-friendly cleaning or related business or environmental topics Direct experience working in a service business A successful track record in a teaching, training or coaching role
