PMI Group, Inc. is looking for a Business Data Analyst to join our Actuary department, located in Walnut Creek, CA. The Business Data Analyst – Actuarial Services supports department objectives by locating, querying and processing information for actuarial models and analysis. The incumbent also manages the process for state insurance rate filings, ensuring an effective implementation and documentation tracking and storage. He/She operates under general guidance from the Director and Senior Actuary with latitude to determine most effective methods to obtain results.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES
1. Under general guidance from manager, develops experience reports and data to contribute to the department’s analysis of variables that influence mortgage insurance risk, pricing and loss reserves. Variables may include delinquencies, claims, losses, etc.
2. Based on general questions/needs from management, extracts information from several company data sources using query and programming languages. Reconciles data from multiple sources to ensure accuracy and validity.
3. Transfers data to Excel and Access for design and creation of tables and charts. Performs filtering, sorting and various manipulations of the data. Reviews information for reasonableness. Presents results to management.
4. Develops, updates, operates or restructures computer programs and analyses. Assists in the design and development of new data reporting systems. Distributes information both within and outside the department.
5. Manages and coordinates all activities involved in the rate filing process. Centrally tracks the schedule with other internal departments, ensuring all information is gathered and rates are submitted on time.
6. Creates rate filing documents and submits to state regulators. Responds to regulator questions and data requests.
7. Tracks all documentation required for rate filing. Develops and maintains a master document database and filing/log system. Ensures all information regarding the routing/circulation and filing of all forms/documents is readily available.
8. Continuously analyzes the rate filing process, develops and presents recommended improvements to manager.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Knowledge & Skills:
1. Excellent organizational and process/project management skills. Ability to analyze effectiveness of a process and develop, recommend & implement improvements.
2. Strong analytical, problem solving skills, as well as attention to detail.
3. Must be able to apply logical reasoning ability to grasp basic SAS programming skills.
4. General knowledge of querying tools/languages and basic programming concepts & principals.
5. Advanced skills in MS Excel and Access and ability to upload and manipulate raw data into meaningful formats for analysis.
6. Good communication, interpersonal and team collaboration skills to effectively deal with internal departments and external contacts involved in both the rate filing process and data mining.
7. General understanding of company programs/products to assist with the coordination of the rate filing requirements.
Education & Experience:
Requied knowledge and skills would typically be acquired thorugh a bachelors degree in business or related field, plus 3+ years of related experience.
