Job Description

 

The Executive Director for Advancement Communications and Marketing is responsible for the strategic planning and direction, supervision, creative direction and general operations of development and alumni communications, including publications programs, websites, e-mail marketing, branding projects and marketing functions across the advancement operation.  As part of the leadership team of the Associate Vice President for Operations and Planning, this position is responsible for setting the strategic direction of the operation to ensure that marketing communications support front-line fundraising.  A key component of this work is the benchmarking and measurement of the impact of marketing communications on donor, prospect, and alumni engagement, participation, and giving.  A primary responsibility is to oversee the centralized marketing communications operation, which requires coordination of multiple efforts across development and alumni relations. In this capacity, the Executive Director supervises staff dedicated to carrying Boston College's fundraising and advancement messages to its constituency of more that 145,000 alumni and friends.  This includes direct supervision of staff within the Executive Director's unit, but also oversight of communications and marketing functions performed by staff across the Advancement Division, with particular attention devoted to the communications and marketing efforts of the Alumni Association and the Boston College Fund.  The Executive Director also is responsible for the strategic direction and central oversight of the development and alumni relations Web presence, particularly in regard to new initiatives that make use of this growing medium for the purpose of engagement and fundraising. The Executive Director interfaces with and is liaison to the University Office of Marketing & Communications and interacts with other key leadership of the University, associate vice-presidents and executive directors across development and alumni relations, and key volunteers and trustees to ensure the quality of the services provided and to identify areas for improvement; and, works with other University offices to secure information and support necessary for the successful growth of a robust marketing communications operation.

 

Requirements

 

This position requires a Bachelor's degree and eight or more years of demonstrated experience in communications, public relations, and/or strategic marketing management and extensive experience supervising professionals.  Also, must have a well developed understanding of fundraising practices and strategies, particularly within a nonprofit or university setting, as well as budget development and fiscal management experience and an ability to guide and motivate staff.  Must have extensive knowledge of the ways in which the Web is increasingly driving online fundraising. Also, must have a dedication to customer service; strong leadership skills; excellent spoken, written and interpersonal communication skills; and, the ability to interact successfully with University administrators and trustees.  Must be able to balance priorities and meet deadlines in a fast paced office environment and have a demonstrated ability to write clearly and effectively.  In addition, to be successful, must be able to use a personal computer with Windows XP operating system, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Outlook and applicable software to manage a website; must be highly motivated, dedicated to the goals of advancing higher education and a mature individual who is a team player.  Some evening and weekend work and travel are required to successfully complete job responsibilities.  A commitment to Jesuit Catholic education and the goals and values of Boston College is critical.
