Our client, a well-known firm in the Chicago area, is currently seeking to hire a Payroll & Accounts Payable Accountant on a temporary, full time basis. This is an excellent opportunity that offers a great starting salary and benefits.
Payroll & Accounts Payable Accountant Duties & ResponsibilitiesSupervise and coordinate the preparation and distribution of the company’s hourly and salaried payroll in a timely and accurate manner.Maintain payroll tax compliance and review the preparation and filing of all required reporting.Manage and oversee the Accounts Payable (A/P) process and records.Register and supervise A/P staff. Process and calculate employee payroll on an ongoing basis via data input of time sheets, time cards from swipe card system, etc. Import data from time clock into payroll system. Verify any discrepancies on the time sheets with the appropriate supervisor. Calculate and process all overtime, retroactive, paid time off (PTO) and disability pay in accordance with company policy. Review and process annual merit increases, promotional increases, commission checks, special payroll runs, holiday bonuses, Management Business Objectives (MBO) payments, etc. Input manual checks written to ensure update of employee quarterly and annual earnings. Follow company policies, payroll policies and government regulations in the processing of payroll procedures, deductions, wage garnishments, child support payments, public aid, jury duty pay, loans, benefit deductions (medical, dental, disability, supplemental insurances, 401k), etc. Ensure that all federal, state and local taxes and Social Security contributions are deducted in accordance with current laws.Direct the preparation and filing of required reports and/or payments to agencies, insurance carriers, banks, organizations, individual employees, etc. Coordinate ancillary payroll services including check cashing truck, direct deposit, etc. Review wages, reports and changes on a weekly basis to ensure accuracy by payroll provider.Maintain individual payroll records and payroll register, and support documentation for journal entries and tax compliance.Inputting employee updates into the payroll system for master file maintenance. Distribute and prepare W-2 forms and proper record retention. Compute and process executive payroll and taxation including car allowances, deferred compensation, stock options, bonuses, relocations, perquisite allowances, etc. as directed.Prepare monthly journal entries for tax and payroll disbursements, state unemployment and other items. Maintain spreadsheets and appropriate supporting files. Supervise and monitor the A/P staff and procedures. Serving as a back-up in processing A/P in the absence of staff. Supervise, develop, measure, monitor and evaluate the performance of direct reports and individuals within the functional area. Perform annual evaluation of staff and make salary recommendations. Create plans for improvement and development of staff.Lead and manage staff members and direct reports in a manner that fosters ethical business practices and teamwork while supporting and enforcing all company policies and practices.Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Payroll & Accounts Payable Accountant Skills & Characteristics Direct experience leading and managing compliance strategy and program, including gap analysis and development of effective key controlsAbility to train and to lead management team regarding compliance responsibilitiesBachelor's degree in Accounting or related discipline (MBA or advanced business/accounting degree preferred)At least 7 years accounting experience, including a minimum of 2 years in public accountingExperience in developing initial strategic plan for Sarbanes Oxley compliance
