Position Summary: The New York City Department of Education (DOE) is the largest school system in the nation, with nearly 1.1 million students, 135,000 employees (including 80,000 teachers) and an annual budget of $14+ billion. Since its inception in 2003, the Children First Agenda for New York’s schools has driven the Department of Education’s work in adopting uniform, rigorous curricula for all schools, starting new small schools to increase educational options for students and transforming the structure and culture of the Department of Education to encourage educational excellence and the work necessary to support that goal.
Mayor Bloomberg and Chancellor Klein have made accountability an essential element of New York City’s education reform effort. With an investment of over $130 million from national and local foundations, New York City has embarked upon an ambitious education reform initiative that is unprecedented in urban education.
The Senior Analyst in the Office of Accountability will support the Report and Analysis Team in evaluating the performance of all schools in the City. This person will work on challenging and important projects that require strong organizational, communication, and analytical skills.
Reports to: Project Manager, Progress Reports
Direct Reports: N/A
Key Relationships: Works closely with the Children’s First Intensive team, ARIS team, and other members of the evaluation and performance reporting team.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Manage key components of the New York City Progress Report development and analysis.
• Design and perform data analysis relating to the New York City Progress Report and other accountability reports, e.g., Learning Environment Survey, Quality Review, etc.
• Apply structured, thoughtful, analytical approaches to the examination and solution of a wide variety of problems; use ingenuity in selecting and evaluating approaches to unforeseen problems.
• Assist in the development of new Progress Reports for schools that have not received one in the past, such as those focused on special education students and early childhood education.
• Demonstrate and apply a thorough understanding of statistical and analytical methodology and protocols.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Requirements
• A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and at least three years of full-time, paid experience in data analysis, education administration, evaluation and testing, educational planning, or statistics or a master’s degree and at least one year of work experience in the above fields.
Plus
• Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol.
• Ability to develop reports and charts based on research.
• Ability to use independent judgment to adapt and modify research concepts and approaches to specific projects.
• Data analysis experience, including knowledge of statistical software packages such as SAS, S-Plus, etc.
• Attentive to detail, extremely well-organized and able to meet frequent and changing deadlines.
PLUS
• Extensive data analysis experience using Microsoft Excel and/or Access.
• Ability to conduct systematic analysis and develop solutions to complex data analysis problems.
• Ability to trouble-shoot, problem-solve, and anticipate issues around accountability measures.
• Ability to manipulate, organize, and analyze large datasets.
Preferred
• MA/PhD in statistics or related discipline.
• Experience or working knowledge of the public sector and/or demonstrated interest in public education.
Salary: $65,120+
