Special Assistant to Deputy Commissioner, Workforce Development
AGENCY DESCRIPTION:
The Department of Small Business Services (SBS) is a vibrant, client-centered Agency whose mission is to serve New York City's small businesses and commercial districts. SBS makes it easier for businesses in New York City to form, do business and grow by providing direct assistance to business owners, fostering economic development in commercial districts, and linking employers to a skilled and qualified workforce. SBS is quickly becoming one of the most respected and dynamic Agencies in the City, and continues to reach for higher professional standards through innovative systems, new approaches to government, and a strong focus on its employees.
By providing hiring and training services to meet the needs of businesses, SBS places the City's jobseekers in growing sectors and occupations and supports wage gain and advancement of workers in those occupations. Through Workforce1 Career Centers and Business Solutions Centers throughout the five boroughs, SBS provides an easily accessible portal for businesses and jobseeker clients to benefit from these services. In order to better reach the City's jobseekers in need of placement services, SBS Workforce1 Career Centers are building upon ongoing partnerships with community-based organizations, government organizations and education partners throughout the City.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Workforce Development Division is seeking a Special Assistant to support the Executive Office including the Deputy Commissioner for Workforce Development, Policy Advisor and Strategic Planning Director for the division. In this capacity, the Special Assistant will:
• Manage schedules for the Executive Office
• Assist the Executive Office staff with day-to-day duties, including scheduling, answering phones, and compiling preparatory materials
• Handle travel arrangements for the Executive Office
• Arrange logistical requirements associated with public meetings for the division
• Coordinate internal and external communications for Division, including internal updates and reports to City Hall and other stakeholders
• Track progress of targeted initiatives with staff and update the Deputy Commissioner to areas that need attention
• Manage correspondence addressed to the Division, the Commissioner and/or the Mayor on workforce issues
PREFERRED SKILLS:
• Strong communications skills
• Detailed oriented and organized
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, handle multiple projects simultaneously, and prioritizing assignments
• Excellent MS Word and Outlook skills
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and three years of satisfactory, full-time progressively responsible clerical/administrative experience, one year of which must have been in an administrative capacity or supervising staff performing clerical/administrative work of more than moderate difficulty; or
2. An associate degree or 60 semester credits from an accredited college and four years of satisfactory, full-time progressively responsible experience as described in "1" above; or
3. A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and five years of satisfactory, full-time progressively responsible experience as described in "1"above; or
4. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1", "2" or "3" above. However, all candidates must possess the one year of administrative or supervisory experience as described in "1" above. Education above the high school level may be substituted for the general clerical/administrative experience (but not for the one year of administrative or supervisory experience described in "1" above) at a rate of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for 6 months of experience up to a maximum of 3 _ years.
