More information about Dow can be found at www.dow.com  The Dow Chemical Company has a challenging and rewarding opportunity for an Environmental Chemistry Specialist, located in Midland, Michigan.  This EH&S position exists to generate laboratory data and provide interpretation of the processes which influence the partitioning, transport, and lifetime of chemicals in environmental compartments ranging from the atmosphere to surface waters, soil and groundwater.  Experience with the use and handling of radionucleides is a requirement for this role. This position is functionally aligned with the Environmental Chemistry discipline within Dow's Toxicology & Environmental Research & Consulting group (TERC).  TERC is committed to conducting research to establish safety of Dow products for humans and the environment, and is comprised of three key areas:  Testing; Research; and Consulting. The Environmental Chemistry Specialist position will require an individual with initiative who can work well in a team environment and independently.The candidate should have experience in writing technical reports and scientific manuscripts as well as possess a working knowledge of U.S. and International regulatory testing guidelines.Experience in conducting standardized testing according to U.S. EPA Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards is also required. The ability to meet deadlines, multi-task, and adjust to shifting priorities is essential.  There will be routine use of low level radioisotopes in this position and a high degree of computer proficiency is required, with a high competency in the utilization of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word.  Other responsibilities of this role include:  Conduct and design environmental screening studies for new and existing products. Laboratory testing includes physical/chemical characterization and biodegradation testing of Dow products. Write protocols, manage study conduct, interpret data, and write scientific reports. Implement and improve team processes for providing analytical support to TERC in a cost-effective manner that is consistent with good scientific practices and compliant with pertinent regulations. A good understanding of the principles of scientific inquiry within their specific field of research (e.g. mammalian and environmental toxicology, environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry etc.). Sufficient knowledge of the design, conduct, data generation, outcomes, and general interpretive principles for the specific study type to which they have been assigned to be able to serve as the single point of study control. Working knowledge of basic statistical parameters, e.g. mean, standard deviation, standard error, range, median, analysis of variance, analysis of covariance, other statistical procedures as defined by the specific group. Have a basic understanding of microbiology. Understand government guideline requirements for specific study types. Provide consulting to the businesses on issues relating to the environmental fate of Dow's products. Conduct environmental assessments which include compilation and interpretation of available information on the environmental fate and lifetime of Dow products and product families.Safety is of the utmost importance in this position, as the successful candidate will be regularly working with test chemicals, biological samples, and occasionally radioisotopes.  The ability for keen attention to detail and following safe practices is essential. B.S. or M.S. degree in Environmental Chemistry, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering or related field is required Experience with the use and handling of radionucleides is a required for this role Minimum of five years work experience in the practical application of environmental chemistry (or related fields) within industry or research Experience to include development of methods for trace analysis in environmental matrices using gas chromatography, high-performance liquid chromatography, and mass spectrometry Knowledge of standard methods for analysis of chemicals in soil, water, or wastewater sludge Experience in conducting standardized testing according to U.S. EPA Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) standards is also requiredAt Dow, we are harnessing the power of science and technology to improve the lives of people around the world.
