Our broad objectives center on the continual development and improvement of petroleum refining, petrochemical, gas production, energy and chemical production technology.  We have an immediate opening for an Instrument Engineer within our Process Technology and Equipment (PT&E) business. Instrument Engineer will be Accountable for: Meeting budgeted hours, planned schedule, and agreed-upon level of quality on assigned project work Communicating with the project manager on required changes to budget, schedule, or quality level on assigned project work Communicating with the project manager on progress on assigned project work Identifying opportunities for instrument-and-control work-process and design-tool improvements Developing work processes and tools that improve UOP’s products and efficiency Keeping up-to-date with current technology developments in the instrument-and-control area Interfacing with customer to determine project instrument-and-control requirements Providing technical support for proposals based on direction of manager Supporting the Technical Manager in his support of the development and maintenance of outside suppler relationships Producing a complete definition of instrument-and-control requirements incorporating applicable code and customer requirements Developing P&IDs Preparing instrument-and-control requirement documents for the designer, fabricator, and installer Identifying minimum hydraulic requirements for instrumentation and possible non conformance within hydraulic reports Performing instrument detailed design Preparing instrument specifications and requisitions Recording instrument changes on the P&IDs in preparation for internal checks, customer checks, official release, and revisions Identifying inconsistencies and problems that may be present on equipment specifications or P&IDs during the design phase Generating electronic copies of instrument specifications and associated text file of the database information? Processing required instrument revisions in a timely manner Explaining UOP's philosophy regarding control issues to internal and external customers Evaluating the instrument-and-control portion of supplier bids and participating in the supplier selection process Reviewing the instrument-and-control design for conformance with customer requirements and applicable codes Determining if instrument revisions are required based on equipment specification revisions Coordinating with the fabricator throughout the fabrication phase of the project on instrument-and-control issues Inspecting instrument-and-control equipment and fabrication for conformance with project requirements and applicable codes Inspecting instrument-and-control site construction for conformance with project requirements and applicable codes Analyzing and recommending solutions to technical problems in the instrument-and-control area Coaching and mentoring equipment engineers regarding their instrument-and-control deliverables (e.g., seal system instruments) Working effectively with team members Checking the work of others for technical accuracy and compliance with established guidelines and procedures Communicating key decisions made on projects to othersBasic Qualifications Mechanical, Electrical, or Chemical Engineering degree required. Might consider technical certification + relevant experience for the right person. 2-5 years experience with process instrument control and construction Excellent teamwork and communication skills are needed to be successful Ability to travel both domestically and internationally – (up to 6 weeks). Travel is typically less than a week at a time, 10% total. Additional Qualifications 5 + years experience is preferred Oil / refinery or petrochemical industry experience is preferred, but will consider power / energy, food, or other chemical processing experience
