Materials Development Manager

 

TITLE:   Materials Development Manager

 

Department:  NDMaterials  STATUS:  Exempt

 

SUMMARY:

  Provides effective supervision and technical leadership to process engineers and technicians in support of the development scale up and pilot manufacture of advanced materials.   Coordinates logistics with third party vendors.  Manages flow of materials and inventory to accomplish sales plan.  Interacts with Quality, Safety, Facilities, Sales and manufacturing personnel in supporting product development as well as longer term quality and/or cost improvements.  Provides direct technical support customers in the development of new products and capabilities.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

 

1. Provides technical and managerial oversight to process engineering team regarding problem resolution, cost reduction and quality improvement initiatives.

2. Utilizes Stage-Gate methodology to manage projects to support new products.

3. Assembles and evaluates information and data to form conclusions and recommendations and communicates these accordingly.

4. Works closely with sales to develop plans to support inventory and customer orders.

5. Develops written communications within group to document engineering results and procedural documentation for developed processes and technologies.

6. Provides estimated of labor and materials costs to support Sales in quoting new products.

7. Serves as technical contact with key customers and vendors to facilitate communication regarding technical issues and logistics of materials supply.

8. Creates and implements plans to meet project objectives. Interacts with technicians and other engineers as applicable.

9. Is responsible for effective and timely written reports and oral communications in relation to other responsibilities to superiors and to subordinates.

10.  Interacts with personnel outside group, such as manufacturing technicians, engineers, QA, Safety, Facilities and Sales representatives to achieve Company goals and objectives.

11.  Participates in the performance evaluations of all staff members under his supervision; recommends corrective action, as needed.

12.  Is responsible for self-improvement in technology base, computer skills, and fundamental engineering skills.

 

ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

Performs related duties as assigned.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

B.S. in Ceramics, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or related field and a minimum of 8 years relevant industrial experience.  Minimum of 3 years experience in technical management of engineers and technicians.  Experience with developing new products a plus, experience with materials synthesis, especially precipitated metals a plus.
