Battelle is a world leader in science and technology research. Atlanta Analytical Services (AAS) is a part of the Analytical and Environmental Chemistry Product Line and provides laboratory support to the Centers or Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), National Center for Environmental Health (NCEH), Division of Laboratory Sciences (DLS). AAS is seeking a Radionuclide Chemist to work full-time on a regular shift in the Radiation Laboratory of the Inorganic and Radiation Analytical Toxicology Branch. The selected applicant would play a critical role in establishing CDC's Radionuclide Laboratory capabilities. The selected applicant would develop, refine, and validate methods used for the quantification of radionuclides in various biological matrices. Salary will be determined based on education and experience. A full benefits package will be provided. The selected candidate will have to obtain and maintain a CDC security clearance. The selected candidate must eligible for work in the US. The selected applicant will work on-site at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Chamblee Campus (near Atlanta Georgia). The primary duties include the Research and Development of analytical methods for the assessment of radionuclides in biological samples using Gamma or Alpha Spectrometry, Liquid Scintillation Counting, Inductively Coupled Plasma - Mass Spectrometer (ICP-MS), both low resolution (quadrupole) and high resolution (magnetic sector-HR-ICP-MS. Primary job responsibilities may include but not limited to: Formulation of research plans, conducting experiments, and interpreting and evaluating data; Procurement of general laboratory supplies for the inorganic and radionuclide laboratory; Perform gamma and alpha radiation surveys to confirm that no contamination is evident before and after performing experimentation; Develop Quality Control (QC) materials for radionuclide methodologies; Participate in complete instrument comparisons and evaluations to ensure that QC is maintained across instrumentation; Participate in QC pool preparation and wet bench chemistry to support analysis throughput across the laboratory; Develop and maintaining an isotope inventory tracking system which provides an updated decay status for various radionuclides; Develop a system for tracking purchases and disposal of radionuclides and report to the CDC Radiation Safety Office on a quarterly basis; Maintenance of an Authorized User List as needed; Receipt and distribution of all radioactive materials; Maintain a current bibliography of scientific journals and publications to develop an information database for radionuclide chemistry and analysis; Maintain a constant awareness of all rules and regulations with regard to the proper handling of all waste; and Maintain CLIA '88 documentation. The ideal candidate would have a Ph.D. in chemistry (although a candidate with a BS and/or MS and considerable experience would not be ruled out) with specific experience in inorganic chemistry, gamma spectroscopy, radiochemistry, analytical chemistry, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Other general descriptors might be: non-traditional; thinking out of the box; cutting edge; and skilled in technology.
