Sr. Infrared Optics Technician (#115238)
National Security Directorate
Physical & Chemical Sciences Division
Chemical & Biological Sciences group
Job Description:
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory's Chemical & Biological Sciences Group is searching for a Technician Level 5 to become part of an established interdisciplinary research team addressing numerous challenges in infrared optics and detection.
The Chemical and Biological Sciences Group is an interdisciplinary group of approximately 60 biologists, chemists, physicists, and engineers that solve research and development challenges related to chemical and biological detection and forensics. Much of the work involves sample analysis or remote (standoff) trace detection in complex matrices including environmental, food, or biological samples, and is directed toward national security missions to prevent and counter acts of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons or mass destruction. Key challenges include: identifying the appropriate signatures, sample collection/preservation and preparation, development of detection and analysis technologies, and development of approaches and analytical methods for high confidence measurements. These challenges are addressed by three teams within the group: Biodefense, Trace Organic Analysis, and Optics and Infrared Sensing.
Much of the research within the Optics and Infrared Sensing Team is focused on the detection of signatures of interest using a broad suite of spectroscopic techniques. Research areas include: quantum cascade laser design and development, cutting edge lens design and manufacture, multipass absorption spectroscopy in gaseous media, optical communications, and hyperspectral imaging and characterization. The spectroscopic techniques employed include absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence, Raman, LIDAR, and atomic absorption spectroscopy.
* Assignments may be broad or narrowly focused but requiring contributions of original work.
* Monitors work of more junior staff. Reports progress appropriately to project and line managers. May lead teams.
* Trains, guides, and mentors other technical staff. May determine training requirements. * Teaches problem solving skills and methods.
* Identifies and leads efforts to develop new procedures and methods for complex, non-routine, processes. May include technical supervision.
* Critically analyzes design requirements, experimental plans, standard processes, etc., and propose appropriate alternatives.
* Completing assignments requires independence. Assignments are performed under general supervision and are reviewed upon completion of results.
* Contributions are of sufficient value to have some impact on the outcome of entire project or group accomplishments.
* Provides task leadership on project activities.
* Helps structure and write analytical results, methods, and procedures. May be a contributing author for publications.
* Effectively develops and delivers materials for technical presentations.
* Independently interacts with other PNNL organizations.
* Accurately estimates time and cost to complete assignments. Manages task to be completed on time and within budget.
Preferred Experience:
* Hands-on experience with lasers and/or optics is required.
* Proficiency in optical layout, assembly, data collection, and interpretation of the results from optical tests is preferred.
* Willingness and ability to perform field testing is required. These tests will involve moving and rearranging optical components and support equipment transported in trailers. The position will also occasionally involve unconventional work hours for limited times.
Minimum Requirements:
* Senior skilled level.
* 6-7 yrs. relevant experience or TIG/AA with 4-5 yrs. experience.
Other Information:
Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.
Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified matter in accordance 10 CFR 710, Appendix B. All Security Clearance (L or Q) positions will be considered by the Department of Energy to be Testing Designated Positions which means that they are subject to applicant, random, and for cause drug testing. In addition, applicants must be able to demonstrate non-use of illegal drugs for the 12 consecutive months preceding completion of the requisite Questionnaire for National Security Positions (QNSP).
Note: Applicants will be considered ineligible for security clearance processing by the U.S. Department of Energy until non-use of illegal drugs for 12 consecutive months can be demonstrated.
In order to reduce cycle time, internal and external solicitations of interest will run concurrently; however, qualified PNNL staff will be given first consideration.
Equal Employment Opportunity:
Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is an Affirmative Action / Equal Opportunity Employer and supports diversity in the workplace. Applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, marital status, or sexual orientation.
