PQ Corporation is a global enterprise operating in 20 countries.  PQ is a leading producer of silicate, zeolite, and other performance materials serving the detergent, pulp and paper, chemical, petroleum, catalyst, water treatment, construction and beverage markets.  PQ operates three divisions: the Chemicals division, which is one of the largest global manufacturers of sodium silicate and related high performance silicate based specialty chemicals, Potters Industries, a wholly owned subsidiary, which is a leading global manufacturer of highly engineered solid and hollow glass spheres used in highway safety and other specialty applications, and the Specialty Zeolite, Catalysts and Adsorbents Business (ZCAD). The ZCAD division produces high performance zeolite and silica gel products.  Part of the ZCAD division is a joint venture with CRI, known as Zeolyst International.  Zeolyst International produces high performance specialty zeolites and catalyst for environmental control and petrochemical applications.

 

We have an immediate need for a Sr. Project/Process Engineer at our plant site in Kansas City, Kansas.  The successful candidate will be responsible for corporate engineering capital projects being implemented at PQ's Kansas City plant, with specific emphasis on supporting the Silica Catalyst and Zeolyst business plans for sales growth.  This individual will also provide process engineering support to the plant.

 

Essential Job Functions

 Project engineer for plant expansions, supporting the needs of the plant/business Program Management Teams (PMT’s) for Silica Catalyst and Zeolyst International. Will also support Industrial Chemicals as needed.

 Work with internal teams (KC Plant and Corporate Engineering in Malvern) to develop P&ID’s, conceptual equipment layouts, and equipment lists to develop capital cost estimates.

 Prepare technical specifications, manpower, and schedule estimates for projects.

 Take process design concepts into detailed engineering packages for bidding and construction utilizing internal and external engineering resources. This includes equipment and vessel specifications, scopes of work, and other documents required for RFQ’s (Request for Quotation).

 Supervise designers and contractors as needed.

 Manages procurement of equipment and services utilizing the Purchasing group.

 Provide technical guidance based on engineering knowledge and experience to improve process operations or system design.

 Travel will be minimal (10%) to Corporate offices in Malvern, to engineering contractors, or equipment vendors.

 

Job Requirements

 

Education:B.S. in Chemical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering, Masters Degree desirable.

 

Experience:Minimum of eight (8) years experience in the chemical industry.  Should have at least four (4) years experience in managing capital projects in the range of $100K to $10 MM. 

 Experience in solids handling and processing.  Experience with handling of flammable hydrocarbons and OSHA PSM.

 

Skills & Abilities:Ability to work independently with minimum supervision.

 Ability to work with plant engineers and operators to flesh out process designs that meet the requirements of the plant.

 Skilled at utilizing both inside and outside engineering resources for detailed design, cost estimating, and other engineering support services.

 

· Ability to manage construction contractors and fabricators.

 

· Ability to develop project schedules us MS Project.

 

· Ability to commission and start-up new process equipment.

 Able to make effective verbal and written presentations to audiences ranging from hourly maintenance staff to senior management.
