Location Jersey City, NJ 07310 Status: Full Time, Employee Job Category: IT/Software Development Relevant Work Experience: 2+ to 5 Years Career Level: Experienced (Non-Manager) Linux Systems Engineer  As a Linux Systems Engineer your main responsibility will be for the installation, maintenance, support, and integrity of our IBM z/VM Linux host environment which is anticipated to be upwards of 60 zLinux hosts as well as a soon to be implemented SUSE SAS Grid environment for one of ISO’s subsidiary companies. The Systems Engineer will be the primary support person for all areas of these environments including but not limited to: installation, monitoring, backup, maintenance and technical support. The Systems Engineer will also be given the primary role of automating as many functions as possible as well as author as much documentation and diagrams that may be required. The Systems Engineer will also be responsible for mentoring and training his peers.  The Systems Engineer must thoroughly understand our customer’s business operation, provide our customers, both internal and external, with technical systems counsel, and supply solutions that satisfy the customer’s ongoing business requirements. Most assignments are complex and difficult, normally independently planned and conducted once approval is obtained.  The Systems Engineer may also be called upon to cover the manager by attending meetings or administrative duties.The Systems Engineer will be part of a four person Unix Administration team which is part of a larger team that includes seven Windows Administrators and five Mainframe Administrators.Although 40 hours may be required weekly this is more the minimum than the norm. Hours are long and include nights and weekends. An “on callâ€� rotation is maintained but support may be needed even when not on call. This position also includes being available to the Immediate Response Unit (IRU) which is responsible for the handling of all production system outages and root cause analysis.  Attendance at scheduled 50 hour weekend Disaster Recovery drills is mandatory as well. (Usually twice a year). The Systems Engineer must be able to manage time efficiently and prioritize assignments based on direction provided. This position also requires participation on high profile project teams.   You must have four to six years experience in information systems with two to four years experience in a distributed system environment working with Sun Solaris Operating Systems and Linux Operating Systems. This position will require someone with very strong Linux skills with experience running installing and maintaining SUSE Linux hosts in an IBM z/VM environment. This position will also require someone with experience installing and maintaining a SUSE Grid environment. A thorough knowledge of network protocols for networking in a heterogeneous environment. Strong analytical techniques required as well as using the OS and third party vendor tools when applicable.  Fundamental knowledge in two or more of the following: Checkpoint Firewalls, Cisco PIX firewall, Peoplesoft, PGP, CA-Unicenter, Server backup/recovery preferably Legato Networker.
