Operating Systems Engineer Intermediate - AIX Under general direction of the management team and senior staff, the operating systems engineer - intermediate maintains operating system software and purchased systems software packages, determines and resolves problems occurring in systems software or hardware and acts as a technical liaison to computer vendors and application owners.  The incumbent will assume on-call support responsibility on occasion. Specific responsibilities will include: maintaining integrity and performance of an operating system environment; maintaining production change control schedule and supporting change control activity; monitoring and maintaining continuity with system software licensing and maintenance agreements; procuring, configuring, deploying, and maintaining platform/ system/network infrastructure; providing ongoing operational support of enterprise-wide applications, databases, and technology; providing tactical troubleshooting of platform/ system/network hardware and software problems; identifying documents, determining the cause of, and correcting common instances of system/server performance degradation; investigating and installing complex OS patches; implementing disaster recovery policies and procedures on a particular systems; conducting system backup and recovery procedures on a systems; being knowledgeable in system hardening techniques as well as user access levels; modifying kernel and network tunable parameters with supervision; testing, debugging, modifying, tuning, and documenting operating system software.  The ideal candidate typically has completed a four-year academic degree including courses in computer programming, systems analysis, system development, or systems engineering OR has acquired core IT skills and knowledge via practical experience.  The candidate should demonstrate a working understanding of the fundamental tools and concepts of information technology infrastructure administration, and apply that understanding to make independent practical contributions to IT work within the corporate UPMC IT organization.  A minimum of three years experience in the management and administration of AIX is highly desired; experience working with IBM P 5 technology is preferred.   UPMC also offers a competitive compensation and benefits package along with a strong growth-oriented working environment.
