We are currently seeking Satellite Communication Engineers to deploy to McMurdo, South Pole or Palmer Antarctic Research Station for various periods of time beginning in approximately August of 2008. The primary is first in line for the position and the alternate is next in line to deploy should the primary person be unable to meet position and/or deployment requirements. Responsibilities: The SatCom Engineer is responsible for analysis and design of satellite communications systems. Additional responsibilities are as follows: · Analyzes satellite communication systems and provides design of satellite communication systems used to support voice, data, and video transfer. Works with operations to review existing system design, operational efficiency, control systems, and supportability. Recommends improvements to the preceding to improve USAP communications capabilities and reliability. · Reviews existing systems for sparing and life cycle maintenance schedules to establish both tactical and strategic budgeting plans to ensure uninterrupted communications capabilities from stations as well as field camps that require satellite communications capabilities. · Provides input to all satellite system designs, to all design of systems utilizing satellite systems, and reviews all documentation produced by the Technical Writer in support of satellite systems. · Works with the Manager, Supervisor or Project Manager, Information Technology, as team member or lead in using Project Management methodology to accomplish engineering projects. · Deploys to Antarctica or other locations to gather information or to supervise system installations, as required. · Designs, assembles, tests and deploys mobile satellite communications devices as required (e.g. GOES-3). · Remains current on latest developments in the communications industry through trade and vendor publications, professional seminars and corporate sponsored training. Qualifications: REQUIRED SKILLS: Position requires a BS degree in Engineering with an emphasis in communications systems or equivalent experience may be accepted in lieu of degree. Successful candidate must have at least six years diversified experience in engineering design and review in HF, UHF/VHF, microwave and satellite systems. Additional Polar Information: All contract positions include competitive salary and a comprehensive benefits package. For the time you are in Antarctica compensation also includes travel to and from the ice, room & board, and you are eligible for a performance-based bonus upon successful completion of your contract. FYI – Only authorized personnel are allowed on station and you need to remain on station for the duration of your contract except in case of emergency.
