Senior Systems Engineer

 

 

Position Summary

The person filling this position will be responsible for maintaining and supporting our development servers and 24x7 time-critical production architecture, which run under RedHat and SuSE Linux operating systems. The candidate should specialize in Linux, with proven experience with HP hardware architectures, and should also have mid-level experience administering and supporting Windows and Cisco/HP LAN/WAN architectures.

 

Principal DutiesArchitecture, Engineering, Implementation, and Administration of SuSE and RedHat linux-based servers and related softwareTune and optimize kernel, memory, network and I/O performanceWork closely with teams of developers and scientists to make appropriate infrastructure recommendations based on applications needsDesign and provide regular reports on system performance and storage utilizationBuild and maintain appropriate software tools to meet business objectivesProvide top-level Linux support for all technology groups in the companyParticipate in off-hour on-call rotating support schedules for production systems – must be willing to carry phone and email device 24x7 to handle emergenciesOversee new and existing systems design and implementation projectsParticipate in R&D projects to explore new technologies Explore, create, and maintain close relationships with manufacturers and vendorsDesign and standardize systems documentationImplement data security policies, user authentication management policies, disaster recovery plan and server side of desktop support policiesDetect, analyze and resolve problems associated with Linux based servers and client software on desktop and laptop computer workstations that operate under WindowsSupport offsite disaster recovery efforts by participating in routine disaster recovery testsEnsure data/media recoverability by implementing a schedule of system backups and database archive operationsSupport media management through internal methods and procedures or through offsite storage and retrieval servicesConducts routine hardware and software audits of servers/workstations for compliance with established standards, policies, procedures and configuration guidelines

The Senior Systems Engineer must be able to work on complex problems with minimum to no supervision. He/she must be able to follow defined procedures and practices, using approved tools to produce desired results. 

 

Qualification/Requirements

Requires a BS in computer science or equivalent job experience.

 

Minimum five years experience in an architect/engineer/support capacity for critical linux environments.

 

One or more of the following certifications is REQUIRED: RHCE, CLE (NCLE), LPIC (LPIC-2 minimum, LPIC-3 preferred). One or more of the following certifications is REQUIRED: HP Accredited Systems Engineer (ASE), HP Master Accredited Systems Engineer (MASE, SAN Architect preferred). VMware Certified Professional,

VMware Infrastructure 3

 

Excellent oral and written communications and documentation skills are required, as is the ability to function as an integral part of a top-notch engineering team.
