The Fermilab Technical Division (TD) is involved in the support of active accelerators and in the development of future high-energy physics machines. The Test and Instrumentation Department of the TD performs measurements and tests of both R&D and production accelerator components, and develops technologically advanced instrumentation and control solutions for accelerator applications. The two major accelerator technologies that the department supports are magnets (conventional and superconducting) and Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) cavities for use at Fermilab and in collaborations world-wide.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include design, implementation, debugging, documentation, and maintenance of software for data acquisition and measurement systems in support of testing accelerator components, including magnets and Superconducting RF cavities. The successful candidate will provide operational support for on-line systems and participate in developing new data acquisition and test systems. In addition, will work on Intranet applications such as Web-based data retrieval and presentation systems and participate in maintaining websites.

Essential Functions:

Will develop and maintain software using a variety of programming languages such as C/C++, Java, and Labview under a variety of operating systems such as Windows and Linux. Will help to configure tests and resolve issues with applications, computing platforms or networks during testing. Knowledge of the Linux and Windows environments is necessary. Familiarity with VxWorks, Labview, and modern data acquisition, measurement and test systems is highly desirable. Experience in any or all of the following is desired: relational databases, systems administration, networking, distributed computing, embedded programming, real-time programming, and Web-based applications. Ability to quickly learn and apply new software skills and techniques is expected.

Requirements (skills, education, training):

Qualified candidates will possess a minimum of a Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or equivalent, and several years of software development experience, preferably developing and debugging real-time, data acquisition, measurements, and test software. Must have good troubleshooting skills and the ability to work through challenges independently. Must be able to work independently as well as work well with a team. Good to excellent communications skills are required, with a willingness to make written and/or oral presentations as needed. Good software documentation skills are expected.
