Communications Network Specialist

The mission of the USCG POP Team is to provide technical support and engineering services, implementation of enterprise solutions reflecting the United States Coast Guard’s (USCG) internal work processes, and establish the critical link between planning and implementation by aligning technology with USCG mission goals.The POP team provides overall engineering support and management for the following components.  Wide Area Network; Remote Access Server(RAS); Virtual Private Network(VPN); Radius; external electronic mail; anti-virus & spam; firewall/Demilitarized Zone (DMZ); network monitoring / forensics; web filtering; Domain Name Services(DNS).Specific Duties:• Work closely with project management, client, carriers, and other technical staffs to analyze technical requirements, certify, and assist in the implementation of enterprise solutions.Bachelors Degree or equivalent and a minimum of 5 years of experience in the planning, engineering, and architecture/design of enterprise global WAN networks is required.Additional Requirements:• Ability to successfully complete the Stanley Background Investigation to include; 50 State Criminal, Education, Employment, Credit and Driving Records Checks for continued employment. • Possession of an INTERIM SECRET security clearance is required to begin employment; Ability to maintain a SECRET security clearance is required for continued employment; US Citizenship is required. • Ability to travel up to 25% or less. • Specific knowledge of switches, routers, and hubs is required, as well as a strong background with Wide Area Network engineering experience in the installation and configuration of remote sites. • Detail Engineering Design (DED) • Detailed architecture/engineering diagrams utilizing Microsoft Visio • Site Prep Design Document (describing the Site Prep work required) • Implementation Planning. • Routing protocols such as OSPF, BGP, MPLS, EIGRP, and traffic engineering, as well as BGP and load balancing • Proficiency in OSI Layer 2-3 environments (T1/DS3/OC/SONET/Frame Relay) • Deployment and support of global VPN (IPSEC) • Review Site Survey results to determine Site Preparation requirements (power, cabling, rack/cabinet, etc.). • Rack and stack equipment, understand units of measurements • Wireless technologies and standards 802.11 a/b/g/i • Wiring and cabling (includes demarcation extension, cabling between devices, and end user station cabling if required, per Site Survey results). • Site network testing, to include fail over, DHCP, and basic connectivity testing • Cutover from the legacy Customer networks, including on-site support during network realization. • Technical assistance with the decommissioning of legacy Customer equipment. • Active CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)Preferred:• Must have extensive LAN/WAN infrastructure design and implementation experience in Cisco product line, carrier networks, and network security. • Extensive knowledge of TCP/IP and OSI • Extensive knowledge of OSPF, RIP and BGP is a plus • Experience with global networks and service providers • Extensive large enterprise WAN environment or telecommunications company experience • Must have planned, designed, and implemented telecommunications networks and performed engineering functions in a carrier environment.
