Consulting Network Engineer

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

 

Assists with the design, development, and support of global networking environments.  Responsible for complex testing and analysis of all network facilities, including routers, switches, software, communications equipment, lines, modems, and terminals.  Monitors and controls the performance and status of the network resources.  Utilizes software and hardware tools, identifies and diagnoses problems and factors affecting network performance.  Participates in pre and post-sales meetings with clients determining project scope and technical options and requirements.  Leads teams of Engineers on projects.  Actively participates in recruiting new employees and leads technical interviews.  Provides technology expertise in at least two core technologies.

 

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Technical

 

- Confer with clients’ senior IT management and apply system analysis techniques and procedures to determine hardware, software, or systems functional specifications

- Assist in business development efforts by performing needs assessment and recognizing opportunities.  Write proposals which may include staffing and equipment requirements, planning, and cost analysis

- Advise clients on alternate methods of solving needs or problems or recommends specific solutions.  Solutions may require business modeling or analysis and may include cost structures and justification processes

- Act as technical lead, directing the plans and activities of others assigned to projects.  Provide technical leadership and coaching to other Network Engineers

- Provide direct management to manage lower level engineers on projects

- Create standards and conduct troubleshooting analysis to ascertain problems

- Conduct all phases of information technology projects such as new technology research, state-of-the-art network implementation, etc.  Configures and deploys networking equipment including infrastructure hardware and software, network management tools, routers, switches, hubs, and firewalls

- Produce quality technical documentation for complex solutions

- Manage project meetings at all levels with clients

- Maintains relationships with key business partners

- Mentor level one through level four networking engineers

- Provide network training to Alliant systems, security and application development engineers.

Project Management

 

- Must be capable of leading mid-sized (4 to 6 engineers) projects involving Alliant resources, or smaller projects (1 to 3 engineers) involving both Alliant and client resources.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Education

Technical School Degree or Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience

 

Work Experience

At least 8 years experience in progressive network engineering, of which, at least 5 years must be in a consulting environment. 

 

Ability to learn new technologies quickly and integrate them into a distributed environment. Ability to work in a global team environment.  Excellent organizational skills.

 

Technical Skills

 

Be able to discuss 9 of the 10 networking focus areas and implement in small environments.

Must be capable of implementing technology related to 4 of the 10 networking focus areas in a large scale environment.

 

Must have "expert" level understanding of 1 of the 10 networking focus areas

Certifications

All Consulting Network Engineer requirements plus successful completion of the CCIE written exam.  Completion of another major certification such as the MCSE, SCNA, RHCE, CISSP, CISA or CISM.
