The American Chemical Society is the world’s largest scientific membership association and one of the top ten scientific publishers in the world, located in the heart of Washington, DC. Information Technology is responsible for providing services to Society programs that reach over 158,000 members, and for the print and electronic publication of over 30 scientific journals, a weekly newsmagazine, and an extensive IT network of over 200 editorial offices, as well as for a Web Presence of 90+ pages.
IT is responsible for performing all technology related activities undertaken by the ACS. These include developing, maintaining, enhancing and migrating multiple computer-based systems; providing user service for those systems; and partnering with internal and external constituencies to retain ACS’s position as the premier scientific society publisher. The role of IT is to partner with customers to maintain and enhance productivity and to contribute to the ongoing development of products and technologies.
The Technical Services (TS) department within the IT division is responsible for the entire IT infrastructure of ACS. The TS department is responsible for the HelpDesk, Desktops, Servers, Networks, Storage, Databases, Change Control, and data centers. This responsibility is for the ACS Headquarters, co-location in Virginia, and other remote offices.
Position Summary
The incumbent is responsible for working for the Database Team in managing, maintaining, and supporting ACS’ database environment. He/She will work with the Database Team in undertaking this responsibility. The Database Team is responsible for ACS’ database environment (Oracle and SQL Server). The team performs software installation, database setup and tuning, data refreshes, and backups among other tasks. The database administrator is responsible for determining and analyzing the customer's requirements and working with the team to develop and implement solutions to meet these requirements. Incumbent is expected to have a solid understanding and working knowledge in all areas of SQL Server (2000 and 2005) with some knowledge of Oracle (9i and 10g). He/she will be a member of a larger team consisting of UNIX and Windows system administrators, network engineers, storage administrators, and application engineers working collectively to design, configure, maintain, and enhance an information systems infrastructure. The computer network consists of a heterogeneous mix of computing hardware and software platforms, including servers and workstations, and COTS and custom software applications. The UNIX operating system environment is Sun Solaris. The Windows operating system is Windows 2003. Interfacing with users, management, customers, other IT Engineers, and Configuration Management personnel is critical to success.
Education and Experience and Technical Requirements
Bachelor’s degree, advanced degree, or equivalent experience; 7 + years related experience. Must possess advanced and thorough understanding of SQL Server database systems including clustering technologies (SQL Server Clustering). Oracle (9i and 10g) experience a plus. Must also possess demonstrated relational database design/development and structured programming experience. Experience with data warehousing concepts is desired but not required.
