The IT Principal Architects’ role is to help develop and maintain the high-level design plans for the overall logical and technical IT architecture. This individual will provide technical leadership and consulting across the organization, from project planning up to strategic decision making. Occasionally, critical IT operational issues will be escalated to the architecture group.

The principal architect will report to the chief architect.

Upon occasion, this job will require after-hours work.

Typical travel will be minimal and should not exceed 5% to 10%

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Service Strategy & Planning

• Maintain knowledge of company’s strategic business plans. Review these business plans with the architect team and the chief architect.

• Document and develop in-depth knowledge of company’s existing IT architecture/infrastructure, and technology portfolio. Work with the IT portfolio management to map infrastructure components to business services.

• Develop, document, communicate, and enforce a technology standards policy.

• Conduct research on emerging technologies in support of infrastructure development efforts, and recommend technologies that will increase cost effectiveness and infrastructure agility.

• Develop, document, make recommendations, and communicate plans for investing in IT infrastructure, including analysis of cost reduction opportunities.

• Develop business relationships to understand the value of the IT infrastructure to the business.

Service Design

• Develop and manage service level and operational level agreements, capacity plans, and design for cost-effective service availability.

• Maintain a secure environment through secure design, creation of audit processes and procedures, and implementation of systems to control the IT infrastructure landscape.

• Assist application development teams and competency centers to develop effective systems infrastructure for the business needs.

Service Transition

• Interpret business and technical requirements and write the high-level designs for project-based work.

• Provide architectural consulting expertise, direction, and assistance to systems delivery, telecom delivery, and network delivery groups.

• Review new and existing IT projects, systems designs, and procurement / outsourcing plans for compliance with IT standards and architectural plans.

• Create diagrams and records designating and referencing all system components and their location.

• Identifies and documents technology standards.

• Assist in decision-making process for operational change management.

Service Operation

• For assigned projects during critical times, be available upon occasion to function as an off-hours escalation point of contact.

• Assist IT operations team for the resolution to complex high-priority incidents and problems.

Continual Service Improvement

• Define measurements and assist to gather data on the IT infrastructure landscape.

• Develop and execute test plans to check infrastructure and systems technical performance. Report on findings and make recommendations for improvement.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

• Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year university

• Minimum 8 years prior job related experience.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

• Mastered system infrastructure technology, considered an expert in the IT systems field.

• Mastered network infrastructure technology, considered an expert in the IT network field.

• Experience in systems architecture and integrating with production systems required.

• Experience creating and adhering to Service/Operating Level Agreements, systems procedural documentation and design.

• Prior experience working in a medium to large environment (greater than 5 locations and 500 employees) a plus but not required.

• Prior development experience

TECHNICAL/PROFESSIONAL KNOWLEDGE and SKILLS:

• Strong problem solving skills and reasoning skills required. A “Logical thinker”.

• In-depth knowledge of Microsoft operating and application systems including but not limited to: Active Directory (site design, domain/forest design, GPO, etc), Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft server operating systems,

Microsoft client operating systems (XP, Vista)

• In-depth knowledge of networking technologies including but not limited to: TCP/IP (e.g. interpreting a packet trace file), WAN technologies, VPN, routing protocols, QoS, load balancers, firewalls, routers, switches.

• Expert in clustering and failover technologies for local failure protection.

• Experience designing and implementing disaster recovery technologies,

• Expert level understanding of networking services such as DNS, DHCP, and WINS.

• Experience designing UNIX/Linux operating system platforms preferred but not required.

• SAN experience including fiber channel design, logical and physical disk layout.

• VMware ESX (or equivalent virtualization technology).

• Video content encoding and distribution a plus but not required.

• Ability to handle many (20 or more) simultaneous projects and requests.

• Working experience with data security principals including designing for compliance with PCI, HIPAA, SOX, or equivalent.

• Experience working within an IT controls framework (such as COBIT) a plus.

• Experience relating business requirements to system and infrastructure components and designing the bill of materials for a project.

• Experience with telecom/network/video convergence including designing for VoIP, video conferencing, and video distribution a plus.

• Experience with Avaya or Aspect PBX, ACD, CTI a plus but not required.

• Familiar with a standard industry tool for infrastructure monitoring.
