Hardware Research & Development Manger

Supervises: Senior Design Engineer, Design Engineer I/II, Engineering Technicians      

 

                                                 

General Summary:

Supervises a medium to large-sized support staff with first and possibly second level reports. Responsible for one or more major areas of research, development or support activity.  Works under minimal supervision in technical and group management areas.  Serves as a mentor to members of the group in technical, project and management areas.  Performs research, design support and project tasks as needed.

 

Responsibilities:

1)      Understand the customer base and company goals and values 

2)      Accurately estimate time schedules for complex hardware tasks

a)      Well rounded technical knowledge rather than a technical expert, understand the underlying technologies well enough to task personnel properly.

b)      Know enough about the problems to know approximately what tasks will be involved

3)      Know the group and the capabilities of each to be able to allocate work effectively

       a) Resource Planning.

4)      Understand system architecture and design constraints for product planning

a)      Know new technologies that can be applied to solve problems, add features, reduce cost (this is a combination of hardware and software)

b)      Know history of products and what features are needed to be carried forward

5)      Having experience in the Marine industry is a plus, but if not be welling to learn the industry. 

6)      Drive certain tasks, making sure they get done by someone and monitoring the support level/quality

a)      Support Software Quality Assurance (SQA) documents for hardware validation

b)      Manual support

c)      Sustaining work (Manufacturing support)

d)      Customer service support (Working with Quality to support evaluating field returns)

e)      Design Validation Procedures and Report (DVP&R)

f)        Work with System Engineering to develop Fail Mode Analysis (FMEA)

7)      Monitor work flow

a)      Make sure people are making forward progress on the correct task priorities

b)      Get help when needed

c)      Monitor schedules vs. progress made

d)      Ensure proper IT support and design tools are available and that developers know how to use them. 

8)      Monitor the big picture of where we are going

a)      Make sure the overall direction solves long term goals

b)      Allocate resources to ongoing needs for proper tool development needed to speed processes     

9)      Be-able to work globally with other Research and Development facilities.

a)      10% of the time may need travel required domestically and internationally. (New Zealand, Norway, Mexico, and United Kingdom)

10)  Understand the proficiency, technical expertise or deficiencies of each person 

      a)  Develop continue educations programs to keep the group educated on the last techniques and technologies.    

9)    Identifies and resolves system and subsystem design issues.

        a)  Could be Vendor related or Manufacturing related.

10)  Support Management with Budget development.

 

Education Required:                       

Perfer Bachelor of Science in Electrical or Software Engineering or Electrical or Software Engineering Technology and 8-10 years Manager Experience.
