This position is located at Harvard Vanguard’s Kenmore facility in Boston; conveniently located near the MBTA Green Line.

About the Position:

Under minimal direction, is responsible to lead high-level technical design, configuration, and implementation of local and wide area network solutions between multiple platforms including on-going technical support to remote area networks, internet, and EDI communications. Upgrades and maintains all devices of the infrastructure in a multi-vendor, multi-platform computer and network environment. Will develop and implement policies and standards and assure adherence to security procedures. Provides expert level problem resolution, review and troubleshooting of the installation of hardware and implementation of layered software solutions and products. Ensures that network solutions meets the company/client requirements. Must be familiar with a diverse set of network topologies including Ethernet, FDDI, ATM; and all related network hardware. May act as project leader for major products/projects. The highest level of understanding of network operating system software such as UNIX (AIX, Tru64, HPux), Microsoft Server, Desktop OS as well as the TCP/IP protocol and have a foundation in the design and maintenance of enterprise networks based on 10-Base-T, 100-Base-10 physical and logical topologies. Typically reports to the Manager IT Infrastructure.

Candidate Requirements:

Education:

Bachelors Degree in Engineering or Computer Science, or equivalent technical training. Special certification such as CNE and/or MCSE desirable.

Skills:

Skills and experience typically attained through at least seven to ten years network engineering experience. Must possess extensive knowledge of multi-protocol systems and implementation experience with multi-vendor network systems. Advanced experience in the following technologies, Microsoft Server, Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange, Desktop OS/Applications. Additional requirements include an in depth knowledge of Ethernet networks, ability to design and troubleshoot network problems; along with a solid understanding of network protocols including TCP/IP, IPX/SPX, NetBEUI. Design and troubleshooting experience of Cisco routed and switched networks are desired.

Must possess the ability to transport and lift hardware components such as PCs, network equipment, etc.
