The role of the LAN Engineer is to resolve problems identified with the servers providing on site, problem resolution support. Problem Resolution is performed as part of the overall Problem Management Process.

• Server Problem Resolution.
• Root Cause Analysis.
• Fault Management.
• The LAN Engineer has ownership for resolving problems handed down from the Help Desk, and enlists support, as necessary, from other individuals on the LAN team having special expertise. These responsibilities include the following:
• Problem Resolution - solving problems that affects the customer.
• Root Cause Analysis - determining the cause of a problem and recommending a solution.
• Fault Management - solving faults that could affect the customer, or taking the actions necessary to resolve faults identified in the Root Cause Analysis Process.
• Assist with Client server connectivity issues.
• Assist with Network traffic issues.
• After hours support: The LAN engineer will be responsible for after hours (24x7) support calls on a rotating basis, approximately once ever 6 weeks.

Responsibilities of the LAN Engineer include the following:
• Keeping all Netware and Microsoft file servers running at all times
• Research and apply service packs, hot fixes and security updates to servers as needed.
• Perform and monitor server backups.
• Perform server administration functions such as user/group administration, scripting, group policy development and implementation.
• Reporting performance as needed
• Analyzing file server performance data when needed.
• Establishing detection of incipient hardware component failure, including network components using tools such as Compaq’s Insight Manager and Dell’s Open Manage
• Establishing detection of scheduling failures, such as the failure of an application to receive critical data
• Establishing automatic notification of correct personnel through ManageWise agents on the file server which alert the UNCC
• Establishing automated corrective action for server problems where possible using utilities such as SiteScope.
Server Problem Resolution



Job Qualifications:

 • MSCE 2003 minimum certification or 4 years current experience. (MCSE certification a requirement with in 120 months)
• 2 yrs Exchange 2003/2007 experience
• 5 years minimum IT experience
• 2 years minimum Active Directory administration experience
• 2 years minimum experience in an enterprise server environment with both administration and problem resolution of Microsoft 2003 and/or NetWare 6.x servers.
• Citrix MetaFrame Presentation Server 4.0 experience a plus.
• NetBackup experience a plus
• SAN storage management a plus
• NetWare to Microsoft migration experience a significant plus
• Server management software (ILO, IT Assistant WUG, MOM) experience a plus
• Strong network skills (Nortel data) I plus
