NETWORK SUPPORT SPECIALIST

 

The primary role of this position is to ensure efficient continued operation of all networks and networking equipment.  The employee will be involved in the design and implementation of networking technologies as well as ongoing  support of those technologies. Knowledge of new and alternative technologies that might help the College will be obtained through regular interaction with vendors and service providers. This position provides direct support and assistance to the Network  Manager and has backup responsibility for insuring the integrity, security and access to the campus-wide data network.  Some off-hour/weekend work will be required to respond to critical network

problems and modifications.

Qualifications are a Bachelor Degree in Computer Science or related major with a Master degree preferred.  Must have 3 – 6 years extensive experience with TCP/IP networking protocols.  Other experience with data link protocols including Ethernet, PPP and FDDI, programming experience in C or Perl and experience with relational databases is desired.  Must have knowledge of servers with Active Directory, Solaris, BSD and other Unix Operating systems as well as knowledge of switches, routers and servers. Prior experience with network management software and protocols a plus.  Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills are essential.  Experience in a higher education environment preferred.
