Oracle Database Administrator
Our client a high profile organization located in downtown Boston is seeking an Oracle DBA. In this role you will play a VERY key role supporting a high profile dbase environment but at the same time enjoy an amazing amount of work/life balance and a better than average amount of time off!
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Database Administrator manages the database and application server infrastructure: selecting, testing and implementing new software; responsible for managing 9 (nine) installations of Oracle software (currently), running Oracle Application Server (both Middle Tier and Infrastructure), as well as Oracle Database housed on 7 Unix machines; monitors the responsiveness and storage requirements of all machines running Oracle; responsible for Oracle administration of Development, Test, and Production environments; responsible for security administration of all Oracle installations; establishes new users and the user’s environment (tablespaces, roles, grants, etc.); maintains security of all Agency databases and application servers; installs and tests all Oracle patches and Critical Patch Updates; performs installation of and upgrade to new Oracle versions as released and approved by management; develops, tests, and updates database operating procedures, such as the back-up and disaster recovery procedures; documents informational data and procedures concerning the Oracle installations; performs user, developer, and management support.
DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Acts as the administrator and security officer of all databases and application servers, establishing and updating the operating procedures, operating standards, control procedures, and schedules to insure the most efficient and productive utilization of the department’s resources. (Such as establishing back-up procedures and schedules, and designing and writing applications to improve the database or application server’s efficiency.)
2. Responsible for monitoring the day to day operations of the database and application server environment. Maintains the efficiency of the environment through monitoring the connectivity, trouble shooting any potential problems, and error detection and resolution, which can include working with vendors and utilizing technical manuals and Oracle on-line resources.
3. Designs and writes scripts and utilities to enhance the user interface to the database and application server software. Tests these applications by preparing test plans and data, conducting test runs, reviewing results for accuracy and validity, determining the causes of any application errors, and making necessary changes to ensure the validity of the application prior to actual implementation.
4. Manages all application server and database storage, both local and SAN.
5. Maintains the Oracle Infrastructure, including backup/recovery of all platforms, and maintaining current Oracle patch levels and versions.
6. Works with central IT on Oracle infrastructure configuration changes that involve changes to the firewall or DIA information architecture within MAGNET – DMZ, Internal DMZ, Internet Access, CITRIX, etc.
7. Installs and configures workstations with necessary Oracle client software. Installs and configures software applications on the Unix servers for shared usage and updates the software owner’s Unix accounts (in conjunction with the Unix administrator) to access this new software.
8. Provides continuing user support for issues/problems/questions concerning Oracle, Oracle connectivity, and Oracle configuration to include SQL and PL/SQL syntax and performance tuning, index management, export and import of data, and data movement scripting as needed.
9. Composes database and application server program/application documentation including software diagrams flow charts, graphs, work flow, charts, outlines, procedures, input/output documents, program narratives, etc.
10. Attends seminars, training, and professional meetings to keep up to date with developments in the world of Oracle databases and application servers.
11. Trains and/or mentors other personnel on-the-job.
12. Other duties as required and assigned by the Applications Development Manager.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE (List knowledge, skills, and abilities):
1. Proficient in using Oracle Administration Tools, Oracle Enterprise Manager, Oracle OID Administrator, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, Unix operating system (Solaris version 10 specifically) and tools; exposure to Oracle 10g Environment. Proficient in SQL, PL/SQL, indexing, and data load/ETL processes.
2. Good working knowledge of various Unix machines, of the types, concepts, techniques, and applications of database and application server software, of the capabilities and limitations of computer hardware, which can comprise a database and application server environment, of the terminology, codes and standard abbreviations used in database and application server management, of the types, methods, availability, and applications of database and web-based tools and utilities; of the methods and techniques of electronic data processing operating systems, of the methods and techniques used in organizing work processes and functions to facilitate the use of computer methods, of computer programming languages, of the principles, methods, and techniques of computer systems analysis and design, of basic mathematics, elementary algebra and mathematical techniques used in solving electronic data processing problems.
3. Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergencies and to adjust to changing procedures and environments, to communicate effectively both orally and in written documents and instructions, to follow oral and written instructions, to prepare and use flowcharts and diagrams, to maintain accurate records, to analyze and determine the applicability of electronic data processing data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations, to determine the proper format and procedures for getting information in accordance with established methods, to work in a team setting, to work independently, to establish rapport and deal effectively with others, to work accurately with numbers, codes, and symbols, to perform arithmetic computations with speed and accuracy (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), to understand the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities, to perform mathematical computations using formulas to solve electronic data processing problems, and to prepare technical reports.
QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB (List knowledge, skills, and abilities)
Knowledge of the laws, rules, and regulations governing assigned unit activities, of the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities, and of the types and uses of agency forms.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least (6) six years of full-time or equivalent part time professional experience in information technology of which (2) two years have been in duties which include database administration. Maximum substitution is a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Computer science for 2 years experience. Must be proficient in Sun/Solaris Unix, Oracle 9i and 10g, and the Wintel desktop environment.
