Senior Cognos Developer

Apex Systems is currently looking for a Senior Cognos Developer.  The position is for a major financial institution located in the Galleria area of Houston, TX.

Summary

The Senior Cognos developer will be a member of our Technology Reporting Development team. Many assignments will involve fairly complex technical design, often working with other developers and technical business users. Implementation tasks may be very significant in scope and/or part of large departmental projects. Some business analysis work will be done as part of spec and design development with users.  The individual will be responsible for a variety of software development tasks with very little direction from a Project Lead or Supervisor.

 

In addition to development contributions, the Senior Cognos Developer has an opportunity to significantly impact efforts to create policy, procedures and the development environment for our reporting and framework staff. For example, peer mentoring, Visual Source Safe Administration, establishment of best practice standards and procedures.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Recommend/enforce the use of industry best practices

Experience with 3-tier project environment

Framework deployment strategies

Framework modeling

Metadata model development

Business presentation modeling

Setting proper joins/object relationships

 

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

·  Work independently and with team members in knowledge sharing, brainstorming, and team building activities

·  Communicate with internal and external customers, supervisor and management, using clear, user-friendly terminology (email, phone, meetings)

·  Learn and adhere to department standards for design, development, and quality control.  Oversee department standard compliance of other team members

·  Self-manage time and task priorities to meet project timelines.  Assist team members in managing their priorities so all projects are completed on time

·  Oversee all Cognos 8 related tasks, assigning to appropriate team members, and following through until completion

·  Proven leadership as a small project manager/technical lead in previous work experience

·  Identify potential risks in projects, design, and coding, and produce resolutions to reduce the risks

·  Recognize improvement needs in existing processes /applications and present viable solutions to the team

·  Assist, guide, and mentor team members to aid in improving their skills

·  Able to handle multiple tasks and produce quality results

·  Able to design teaching material and give Cognos 8 instructions and lab work in a structured classroom environment

·  Ability to learn and adhere to department standards for design, development and quality control.

·  Ability to recognize the need for improvement in existing processes/applications, present solutions, and implementation plan to team with oversight of supervisor.

 

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

· BA/BS or equivalent work experience required

· 1+ year of experience of working with Cognos Now (Dashboard Applicance)

·  7+ years of Business Intelligence reporting and Framework management in Cognos 8

·  Able to install and configure Cognos 8 in a multi-tier secure web environment

·  Able to design and build relational and OLAP models for all Cognos 8 studios

·  Able to setup security, report schedules, and file structures

·  Oversee Cognos 8 design, deployment, maintenance, and usage, utilizing the skills of the team members to provide a stable and productive Cognos 8 environment

·  Solid Fundamental in:

·  Cognos reporting, tools and techniques

·  Cognos 8 SDK/API functions in .Net

·  Code version management, preferably with Visual Source Safe

·  Complete administration of the Cognos 8 environment

·  Performance tuning reports and framework models

 

COMMUNICATION SKILLS

Excellent analytical, and communication skills (both written and verbal) are required, as the position interfaces with end users on a weekly basis.

Ability to work in a team environment is a must.
