Subject Matter Expert and matrix reporting across functional boundaries to provide technical consulting on the most difficult problems and projects.  Candidate has the ability to work independently and also lead others while performing the daily administration of the system environment to include installation and maintenance of system hardware and software products and internal technology consultation.  3 team members report into this role, including Technical Support and Systems Consultants. Works closely with peer (Windows Administrator) on broad impact projects.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND FUNCTIONS
-  Responsible for the planning, installation, administration, maintenance, and problem resolution for the following computing areas:
-  Unix Operating System and file/application servers
-  Linux Operation System and file/application servers
-  Local and wide area network hardware and infrastructure
-  Networked computing applications
-  Facilitate resolution of technical problems and issues that extend across departments and functional boundaries.
-  Consult on the most difficult technical problems and issues.
-  Develop, test, and implement backup and recovery procedures for assigned areas of responsibility.
-  Develop, test, and implement disaster recovery plans and assist in evaluating recovery scenarios.
-  Review overall backup and recovery procedures for all supported platforms.
-  Insure that overall system security is correctly maintained and administered by all areas of technical services.
-  Regularly evaluate new computing and network technologies and make recommendations to IT management.
-  Contribute directly to the design of technology and computing infrastructure.
-  Research, install, and assist in evaluation of software products that are being considered for procurement.
-  Monitor and manage capacity and resource utilization on assigned platforms and recommend hardware upgrades when required.
-  Maintain documentation on assigned platforms.
-  Troubleshoot software and/or hardware problems as they occur and resolve them.
-  Assist in developing budget requirements for hardware, software, and training.
-  Provide on-call technical support to IT on specific areas of expertise.
-  Provide first level support to help desk personnel on technical issues.
-  Provide on-call technical support to IS on a rotating basis.
-  Provide first level support to Support Services personnel on technical issues.

POSITION SPECIFICATIONS
Education: 4 year  technical or related business degree is desired.  (Preferred major in Information Systems or Computer Science.)  
- Equivalent job experience (9+ years) with no degree, an associates degree, or course work towards a degree in Computer Science or related discipline may be substituted for a portion of the educational experience.

Specialized / Training:
Must have at least 7 years experience working in UNIX/LINUX Administration.
Should have experience coordinating and leading efforts of small team.
- Operational systems concepts and structure for pertinent hardware (UNIX, Linux, and Windows)
- Relational data base experience/administration.
