Sr. Network Engineer

The Communication Operations Senior Network Engineer represents a key component of Vulcan Inc.’s data network design and engineering team.  These engineers are chartered to design and deploy highly secure and reliable networks that meet Vulcan’s growing desire to utilize IP for transport of data, voice, and various A/V media types.  To meet this desire and support the global mission of Vulcan, network engineers will be required to utilize both an in depth knowledge of Cisco Systems networking equipment as well as a thorough understanding of transport technologies. 

 

Knowledge, experience, skill, and/or ability

 

Required

· Proven experience designing large, multiple platform networks, involving multiple global sites containing thousands of nodes incorporating various transports types and protocols.

· Experience collaborating with management to set and implement networking policies and standards

· Sound understanding of network operating systems and open system protocols

· Thorough understanding and working knowledge of Internetworking with IP communication protocol and the OSI model

· In depth working experience with various Cisco platforms and IOS’s

· Working experience with various wireless transports (802.11x, Cellular, Microwave, etc.)

· Working experiencing defining requirements based on defined user criteria

· Thorough understanding of characteristics associated with WAN circuits (DS-1, DS-3s, OC-3s, etc.)

· Strong knowledge of telecommunication circuits, bandwidth, as it relates to design criteria and implementation for user network requirementsKnowledgeable one or more of the following network technologies: IP, TCP/IP, UDP/IP, ARP/RARP, BGP, OSPF, HSRP, VLANs, SNMP, NTP, IPSEC, GREIn depth experience designing and implementing high-availability load balancing systems In depth understanding of remote access technologies: analog dial, ISDN, numerous VPN technologiesDetailed technical and operational knowledge of Internet architectures and ISP connectivity Well versed with routing/switching/firewall implementationsComprehensive understanding of network security architectures and their implementation, including router-based ACLsKnowledgeable of network management systems and procedures Working knowledge of PBX functionality, and Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTNs) and Voice Mail conceptsPossess strong diagnostic, conceptual and systematic thinking skills, as well as excellent negotiation, communication and team working abilities Possess strong analytical and planning skills:Ability to conceptualize the integration of the potential of technology with the needs and functions of the organization.Ability communicate the potential of technology through verbal and written forms to all organizational levels Experience with Linux servers and Linux networking issueDemonstrated ability to script in PERL, SQL, ASP, and various other shellsDemonstrated ability to program in various web markup languages to include: HTML, XML, Java, etc.Proven experience mentoring and providing training for less seasoned network engineers

Required computer skills MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)Ability to build network design drawings utilizing Visio is a must 



Education/experience/certifications

 

·  Bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from accredited institution and eight plus years relevant experience, OR equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Certifications (desired)

o  Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE)

o  Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA)

o  Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP)

o  Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
