Telecom Engineer - VOIP

The VOIP - Telecom Engineer manages the operation of, the network performance, capacity planning and forecasting for a company-wide, multi-site 24 x 7 telecommunications infrastructure including several Call Centers. Analyzes current uses and future telephony and integrated digital communication and data transmission systems. Reviews emerging technological enhancements and written proposals for equipment use within the workplace according to project specifications. Designs and oversees the implementation activities of networks to support voice, data, video and multimedia services for the entire business organization.

 

The Telecom Engineer identifies business needs of the internal customer and then reviews and conducts technological surveys of telcom/datacom hardware and software available to meet those needs. Prepares technical bid specifications for Requests for Proposals from vendors.

 

The Telecom Engineer reviews technical proposals for service and equipment submitted by vendors. Insures that specifications for equipment and services provided by vendors/suppliers meet those needs. Conducts an analysis and evaluates the technical feasibility of new-enhanced features.

 

Operationally uses network test equipment such as, T1/E1, LAN testers, sniffers and protocol analyzers to conduct off-line and on-line testing, diagnosing, and debugging of problems. Configures, designs and trouble shoots LAN/routing/switching platforms for multi-protocol environments. May build network simulations within a test environment to resolve compatibility issues.

 

Prepares documentation of existing network systems and processes. Administers the service and hardware contracts along with billing of local and long distance telephone carriers. Responds to problems experienced with equipment or service providers.

 

Certifications needed for the VOIP - Telecom Engineer: Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert CCIE (Voice) desired, Cisco Certified Voice Professional CCVP (Voice) accepted. A Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and/or Computer Science is preferred. At least 3 to 5 years of experience in support and maintenance of telecom/datacom equipment and distribution systems. Demonstrated project management in a large, distributed, multi-department company. Experience with systems integration and network design experience of large and moderate networks. Familiarity with WAN and LAN switching such as, Call Manager. Expertise in the maintenance and configuration of Cisco routers as well as networking and telephony interfaces. Experience with IP, VoIP, QoS, H.323, G711, G723 and G729, SIP and PSTN gateways. Skill in identifying and trouble shooting operational problems with telecom/datacom hardware in a mixed data and VoIP environment.
