Cognos BI Application Engineer-MUST HAVE MS SQL and Cognos BI

Our client provides a complete suite of IT solutions from project execution through to consolidated long-term support, development and enhancement of I.T. solutions. The Business Applications organization is structured around a number of Centers of Excellence, which align to the Group Processes. In addition, Local Application Teams, Enterprise Application Center of Excellence and Integration & Development Center of Excellence are an integral part of this structure.  The goal is to increase flexibility and speed of delivery in response to business requirements, as well as maintaining a strong relationship with the sectors at both a local and central level, in order to deliver real bottom line benefits.

Objective:  COGNOS-BI is the main Business Intelligence tool suite of our client. It gathers local and global information, structures and cleans it and finally stores data in a data-warehouse and multidimensional cubes. It provides a simple user-interface for complex data analysis and reporting with Web portal techniques.  The position belongs to the “Business Intelligence Architecture Team” (BIA), which is a part of I.T. Architecture Group”. The BIA team is in charge of BI projects including BI architecture, BI solutions including operational and ad-hoc reporting… therefore the whole application life-cycle. One of the major BI solutions the COGNOS Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) provides a single-source of data supporting the operational and ad-hoc reporting needs of our business users. The EDW platform consists of Microsoft SQL Server 2000/2005 databases as well as COGNOS-BI 8 techniques for batch processing, data transformation as well as fend-user interfaces like COGNOS Analysis/Powerplay Web, .Net reporting and Web portal. It runs on a multi-server Windows 2000 or 200X environment. The BIA Team supports multiple platforms and databases including ORACLE and SQL Server Databases. 

The BI application engineer, must be highly self-motivated individual committed to deliver high quality work, understands main business processes like Finance or Demand Flow, can analyze business requirements, plan and prepare implementation, organize and execute development tasks and deliver the solutions to production. The position is additionally responsible for support tasks on production environment together with a small team of BI experts. Some role of the position includes overtime work as well as occasional international business travels. The position requires the individual be open-minded, have the ability to communicate with different roles and hierarchy levels, and must have a high level of professionalism and respect.

The BI Application Engineer will support the BI Team as an information delivery specialist and/or application developer to include data extraction and transformation using COGNOS Data Manger tools or similar tools. 
Key Operational Responsibilities:
Develop and support BI solutions like the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW), Multi-dimensional Cubes, Operational & Ad-Hoc reporting
Implement and support batch processes, multi-dimensional cubes and relational models as well as complex user reports and analysis 
Create, develop or support complex ETL processes and SQL procedures, which transfer, load and cleanse data as well as allocate costs and calculate profit & loss for the business 
Develop and support Operational and Ad-hoc reports using the COGNOS reporting suite of tools including FrameWork Manager, Transformation, Query Studio, and/or Reporting Studio
Liaise with business owners to analyze their requirements, be involved in conceptual design, implementation and testing as well as hand-over to production 
Production Support -Responsible for care of ongoing application monitoring regarding performance and stableness, solve potential problems and optimize the routines 
Improve level of automation and take care of technical quality assurance and documentation 
Liaise with I.T. Operations organization in order to solve potential problems, define and analyze new technical requirements and software releases and do the ongoing capacity planning 
Organize and implement support tasks for end-users and key-users 
Fulfill the defined IT processes like Problem Management, System Development Lifecycle, Change Management etc.

Additional Responsibilities:
Performs special projects and assignments in order to respond to special business requirements to be solved via application configuration and/or enhancements and modifications
Act as mentor to the junior members of the organization

Competences Needed:

General/Core Competences:
B.S. in Information Systems, Mathematics/Statistics, Software Engineering, or other science field, or equivalent experience
Five or more years of work experience in Data Warehousing/Business Intelligence area
Five or more years of experience in building complex Data Warehouses using dimensional and relational modeling techniques
Three or more years experience with ETL procedures. 
Experience in writing complex MS SQL queries and stored procedures
Strong knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server
Excellent communication and presentation skills.
